Ottawa, ON (My Sportsbook) - Cory Stillman had a goal and assist, and the
Florida Panthers defeated the
Ottawa Senators, 3-1, for their first road win of the year.
Rostislav Olesz and Nathan Horton each tallied first-period goals for the Panthers, who have won two of their last three. Craig Anderson stopped 41- of-42 shots to earn the win.
"We wanted to have a quick start. The start, the entire first period, won us the game," said Panthers head coach Peter DeBoer. "In fact, even the second we played well, but we sat back in the third. (Ottawa) cranked it up a notch. I don't know what the answer was. Our goalie made some big saves, but we won it with our start. We took some penalties which isn't a textbook way to hold a lead from a coaching perspective, but there's a lot we can learn from that. We needed a win and the guys showed up tonight ready to play."
The Senators were unable to take control of the game despite recording twice as many shots on net, 42-21. Ottawa took 26 shots in the final period alone, but Anderson stopped all the attempts.
"(Anderson) was outstanding. He made about a half dozen big saves in the third period to give us the win," DeBoer said. "That's the kind of goaltending you need when you come into a building like this against a team like that."
Daniel Alfredsson scored the lone goal for Ottawa, which has lost three of four. Jason Spezza and Filip Kuba each notched an assist, but Martin Gerber allowed three goals on 21 shots in taking the loss.
"We didn't generate a lot and we didn't get off to a good start," Spezza said. "We still had a couple of good chances to put the puck in the net. We were trying different things to create chances to help us win the game. We got into a couple of bad habits last year where we played a little too loose. This year we're trying to be patient and do just good things. We still made some good plays, and we're still a good hockey club."
Florida took an early lead in the opening period. Ottawa turned the puck over in their own zone and Gregory Campbell missed on a shot, but the rebound came to Olesz, who was able to fire the puck through traffic and under the legs of Gerber at the 4:45 mark.
Just 48 seconds later, a Panthers' pass up the boards eluded two Ottawa players, and Horton picked it up. He went in all alone on net and fired a shot past Gerber from the left circle to go up 2-0.
Ottawa appeared to get a power-play goal with just 3.5 seconds left in the first period, but Alfredsson hit the puck with a high stick, negating the score.
The Senators finally tallied a goal that counted early in the second on the man-advantage, as Alfredsson took a pass from Spezza in close and stuffed it between Anderson's legs at 2:23.
But the Panthers were able to regain a two-goal advantage with just about eight minutes left in the second. Stillman took a pass from Brett McLean and shot it through a narrow gap between the post and the stick of Gerber.
Ottawa had a chance to cash in late in the third, when David Booth went off for a double-minor at the 16:57 mark. Alfredsson passed to Antoine Vermette, who launched a shot at the front of the crease, but Anderson made a brilliant glove save to preserve the win as Florida killed off the rest of the penalty.
"It was just a bouncing puck there and I was just trying to find it," Anderson said of the save. "I knew I slid too far and I was just trying to get back. Luckily I was back in time."
