Chattanooga, TN (My Sportsbook) - Arjun Atwal birdied the first playoff hole Sunday to defeat Webb Simpson and win his first Nationwide Tour title at the Chattanooga Classic.
Atwal, who established a new course record and 54-hole tournament record, only managed an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish regulation at 24-under 264. Simpson shot a three-under 69 to join him at minus-24 and force a playoff at Black Creek Club.
The playoff started at the par-five 18th. All it took was an Atwal birdie to collect his first Nationwide Tour win. Atwal has three European Tour victories, including one this season.
Even though Simpson couldn't get his first Nationwide Tour win, his second- place check moved him from 86th on the money list inside the top 60 for the Tour Championship in two weeks.
Kris Blanks shot a four-under 68 and was one of two players with four rounds in the 60s. It was good enough for third place at 20-under 268, which was one shot better than Hunter Haas, who managed a one-under 71 on Sunday.
Atwal began the final round with a three-shot lead and that was erased quickly. Simpson birdied three and four and the two-shot swing came on four when Atwal made bogey.
Atwal rebounded with a birdie at five to reclaim a one-shot lead. He eagled the par-five sixth and Simpson made birdie, arming Atwal with a two-shot advantage.
The advantage became three when Simpson bogeyed nine. Atwal suffered a hiccup with a bogey 10, but his lead was back to three shots after a birdie at the 12th.
Both players bogeyed 13 and Simpson got within two after a birdie at No. 15. Atwal double-bogeyed the par-four 16th after some trouble with bunkers and the two were tied.
Atwal and Simpson both birdied 18 to force the extra session, ultimately won by Atwal, who pocketed $90,000 for the win.
Ricky Barnes (67), Won Joon Lee (70), Matt Weibring (72) and Bill Lunde (74) shared sixth at 17-under 271. Bryce Molder fired a six-under 66 and came in 10th at minus-16.
