Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - AIR FORCE: The Falcons lost out on trying to dismiss Navy during the first stage of the annual Commander-in-Chief's Trophy on Saturday, bowing to the Mids in a 33-27 decision at home. Air Force registered 227 yards rushing on 56 attempts, but also picked up an uncharacteristic 184 yards passing from Shea Smith and Tim Jefferson. The punting game let the Falcons down in a big way as the squad had two kicks blocked, both being turned into touchdowns by Navy. Something to keep an eye on in the coming days is the health of Smith who was taken out after becoming ill on the sidelines. The Falcons get back into Mountain West Conference play this weekend as they land in southern California to challenge the San Diego State Aztecs. The academy owns a 17-9 advantage in the all-time series, thanks in part to commanding 55-23 win in last year's meeting.
BYU: The Cougars extended the nation's longest winning streak to 15 games on Friday night as they dismissed the Utah State Aggies, 34-14, in a non- conference bout in Logan. BYU posted 24 points in the first quarter alone and then cruised as it shut out the Aggies for three straight periods. Although he had a pair of passes picked off, quarterback Max Hall converted 23-of-37 attempts for 303 yards and two scores, while running back Harvey Unga chipped in with 89 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Despite allowing a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Cougars still managed to run their streak of shutout quarters to 11, which meant the squad had an unanswered scoring streak of 137 points over the course of the last three outings. The Cougars get back to MWC action this weekend as they confront the New Mexico Lobos at home. BYU captured last year's meeting by a score of 31-24, which means the team now owns a lopsided 42-14-1 mark versus UNM over the years.
COLORADO STATE: Trailing by 11 points less than 12 minutes into the first quarter on Saturday, the Rams refused to give up versus UNLV and battled back for a 41-28 victory at home. Running back Gartrell Johnson had a huge day for the hosts as he ran for a game-high 191 yards and three touchdowns on 33 attempts. Quarterback Billy Farris completed just 15 passes, yet averaged nearly 20 yards per connection (294) and ended up with one touchdown in the contest as well. For the second week in a row the Rams entertain a member of the Mountain West Conference at home as the TCU Horned Frogs stop by on Saturday. TCU has won all but one of the five previous meetings between the two squads, taking a 24-12 decision a year ago.
NEW MEXICO: With Brad Gruner at the controls, the Lobos took a break from trying to beat the Wyoming Cowboys through the air, opting to hit the visitors hard on the ground in a 24-0 shutout on Saturday night. Gruner converted just 8-of-19 passes for a meager 33 yards, while James Wright responded with a game-high 120 yards and a score running the ball for the home team. Paul Baker chipped in 90 yards rushing and Gruner, who had a TD in the contest, another 80 yards as the Lobos posted a whopping 317 yards on the ground. For the third time in the last four games, the Lobos find themselves out on the road, this time facing nationally-ranked BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU took last year's meeting by a score of 31-24, which means the Cougars are easily ahead in the all-time series by a count of 42-14-1.
SAN DIEGO STATE: A two-yard touchdown run by Mekell Wesley in the third quarter was all the Aztecs could manage in their lopsided 41-7 loss to TCU on Saturday in Fort Worth. SDSU's running game was more than shut down as it was held to -13 yards on 15 attempts, the squad limited to a mere 85 yards of total offense. After five games, the Aztecs are second-to-last nationally in rushing with a paltry 49.8 ypg. Quarterbacks Drew Westling and Ryan Lindley combined to hit only 10-of-25 passes for 98 yards, the latter leaving the game in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury. Conference matchups continue from here on out for the Aztecs as they welcome the Air Force Falcons to California this coming weekend. Last season, the Aztecs were tripped up in a 55-23 loss, which means the academy now leads the all-time series by a count of 17-9.
TCU: One of five Horned Frogs to gain at least 40 yards rushing on Saturday, Marcus Jackson came up with a game-high 131 yards and scored twice for TCU as it crushed the San Diego State Aztecs, 41-7. Jackson also converted 10-of-19 passes for another 115 yards and a score as the home team completely dominated SDSU in every facet of the game. Defensively, the Frogs held the visitors to -13 yards rushing and a mere 85 yards of total offense. Perhaps most impressive, TCU controlled the ball for more than 43 minutes. The Horned Frogs return to the road for the third time in four weeks this Saturday as they drop in on the Colorado State Rams for an MWC meeting. Last year, TCU posted a 24-12 win versus the Rams, which means the team has now won four of the five meetings between the two schools.
UNLV: Omar Clayton threw for 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Saturday, but by no means did that get the Rebels close to Colorado State in a 41-28 setback on the road. Frank Summers contributed 109 yards and a score on 20 rushing attempts and Ryan Wolfe scored on his lone carry for a squad that came up with 174 yards on 33 totes. The Rebels catch their first bye of the 2008 season this week and will pick up the action again on October 18th when they entertain the Air Force Falcons. The academy won the most recent meeting a season ago by a score of 31-14, which means UNLV now trails in the all-time series by a count of 9-4.
UTAH: Louie Sakoda proved yet again why he is considered one of the top kickers in the nation last Thursday night as his 37-yard field goal at the gun made all the difference in the team's 31-28 win over Oregon State at Rice- Eccles Stadium. Sakoda, who is already the all-time leading scorer for the program, had two other field goals earlier in the contest to keep the Utes on track. Quarterback Brian Johnson converted 17-of-30 passes for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also scored on a two-point conversion with a mere 1:28 remaining in regulation to lock things up at 28-28 against a team that, a week earlier, had knocked off top-ranked USC at home. With a couple of extra days to prepare the Utes, who became the first FBS program to become bowl eligible, now travel to Laramie to challenge the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday. Last season, Utah completely crushed the Cowboys in a 50-0 victory, giving the Utes a 48-31-1 mark in the all-time series. Last year's meeting had considerable subplots with Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn guaranteeing a win and then having Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham putting the pedal to the metal.
WYOMING: Left in for the duration on Saturday night, Karsten Sween converted 9-of-19 passes for just 71 yards and was intercepted once in the 24-0 setback to New Mexico in Albuquerque. The lackluster offensive showing for the Pokes marked the second shutout in the last three games for the squad. After six games Wyoming has generated a total of just 52 points, making it the lowest scoring offense (9.3 ppg) in the nation heading into play this week. Devin Moore contributed 74 yards rushing on 19 attempts and Wynel Seldon 46 yards on 11 carries in the dismal effort. The next game on the schedule for the Cowboys comes against one of the best teams in the nation, the Utah Utes. Last season, Wyoming was subjected to an ugly 50-0 decision that had head coach Joe Glenn using questionable hand gestures on the sideline, for which he was later reprimanded. Prior to the game Glenn guaranteed a win, news that prompted Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham to pull out all the stops and even try an on-sides kick in the third quarter with the home team leading 43-0. Regardless of last year's festivities, the Pokes still trail in the all-time series with their MWC mates, 48-31-1.
