Brewers try to force a fifth game against Phils in NLDS

(My Sportsbook) - The Milwaukee Brewers try to stave off elimination once again this afternoon when they play Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Miller Park.

Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep in this best-of-five set on Saturday, as J.J. Hardy finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, lifting the Brewers to a 4-1 win.

The victory was the franchise's first in the postseason since October 17, 1982 -- in Game 5 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder each drove in a run, while starter Dave Bush (1-0) scattered five hits and allowed a run over 5 1/3 innings. Salomon Torres survived a scare in the ninth to record the save.

Ryan Howard knocked in the lone run for the Phillies, who are still a win away from reaching the National League Championship Series for the first time since 1993. Jayson Werth doubled, tripled and scored in the loss.

Jamie Moyer (0-1) lasted only four innings, allowing four hits and a pair of runs, walking three and fanning three. He threw 90 pitches in his outing, the shortest since a three-inning start in an August 26 loss to the Mets.

Milwaukee still has a tall task in front of it. There have been four teams that have come back from 0-2 deficits to win division series since baseball introduced its current wild card format in 1995, but they have all been AL teams. An NL team has never come back from an 0-2 hole in division series play.

So, the Brewers will turn to veteran Jeff Suppan to force a decisive fifth game. Suppan struggled at times this season, posting a 10-10 mark to go along with a 4.96 ERA.

However, he has been solid in the postseason, where he is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA. Over his last three playoff starts he is 1-0, while surrendering just four runs in 21 innings. He was also the 2006 NLCS MVP with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Suppan, though, has struggled in his career against the Phils. In 12 starts against them, the 33-year-old right-hander is 3-6 with a 6.13 ERA.

Philadelphia, meanwhile will counter with Joe Blanton, who will be making his first-ever postseason start. Blanton, acquired from Oakland in July, was 4-0 with a 4.20 ERA in 13 starts for the Phils.

Blanton, who tossed two scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 ALCS, received a no-decision in his only other appearance against the Brewers back on September 14.

The Phillies won five of their six regular-season matchups with the Brewers this year.

Game 5 of this series, if necessary, will be played on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.
