Stockholm, Sweden (My Sportsbook) - Tyler Kennedy's overtime goal with just 23.6 left on the clock helped the Pittsburgh Penguins take a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in the 2008-09 opener for both clubs at The Globe Arena.

With time winding down in the extra session, Kennedy stole the puck from Jason Spezza and skated down the left wing. On the fly from the left circle, Kennedy let loose with a shot that beat Martin Gerber to the short side for the win.

It was the second goal of the game for Kennedy, while Evgeni Malkin and Robert Scuderi also lit the lamp for the Penguins, who are the reigning Eastern Conference champions.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves in the win for Pittsburgh, which lost to Detroit in six games in last year's Stanley Cup finals.

Spezza had a goal and an assist while Dany Heatley and Shean Donovan also scored for the Senators, who were swept by Pittsburgh in the first round of last year's playoffs. Gerber made 26 saves in the loss.

This was the debut of Craig Hartsburg as the head coach for Ottawa. He was hired in the offseason by general manager Bryan Murray, who had assumed temporary head coaching duties after firing John Paddock with 18 games remaining in the 2007-08 season.

The Penguins wasted no time taking the lead as Kennedy's wrister beat Gerber for a 1-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game.

About halfway through the first stanza, Ottawa tied the game as Donovan tipped in a Dean McAmmond shot at the 9:13 mark of the frame.

Skating shorthanded, Pittsburgh took the lead 3:18 into the second period. Malkin broke up a pass at the Penguin blueline and skated the length of the ice on a clean breakaway. He charged to the net and from in front went to the backhand and slid the disc under the left pad of Gerber.

Ottawa, though, scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Good work in the Pittsburgh end resulted in Spezza getting the puck along the boards to the left side of the net. Spezza backhanded a pass to the front where Heatley knocked it down on the backhand and, from the forehand, zipped a shot past the glove of Fleury for a power-play goal with 7:45 left in the frame.

While shorthanded, the Senators then took the lead as a neutral zone turnover resulted in a 2-on-1 break going the other way. Spezza went down the right wing and used the left winger as a decoy before burying a shot top shelf to the glove side with 2:05 left in the second.

Pittsburgh, though, quickly evened the score in the third period. On a rush into the Ottawa end, Sidney Crosby fired a pass from the right boards to the left circle where Scuderi whipped a shot that trickled past Gerber less than four minutes in.
