Cary, NC (My Sportsbook) - Eduardo Romero closed with a six-under 66 for a comfortable three-shot win Sunday at the SAS Championship, his third victory of the season.
The 54-year-old Argentine, who won the U.S. Senior Open Championship last month, finished 54 holes at 15-under-par 201 for his fourth career Champions Tour title.
Tom Kite, the 1992 U.S. Open champion, shot a three-under 69 and took second place at 12-under 204 -- his second consecutive runner-up.
Andy Bean and Gil Morgan both shot 67s to tie for third place at 11-under 205, while second-round leader Bruce Fleisher (72) shared fifth with Jim Thorpe (67) at 10-under 206.
Romero entered the final round one shot off Fleisher's lead and made four birdies in his first seven holes to take a two-stroke lead of his own. He was three shots ahead when Kite missed a three-foot par putt on the 10th hole.
But after Romero rolled in a five-foot birdie putt at No. 11 to move ahead by four, Kite followed with a nine-footer for birdie at the 12th to cut that advantage to three.
Romero then missed the green badly at the 13th hole and took a bogey -- looking, momentarily, like he let the field back in.
"I felt very nervous at No. 14," he said.
But a 16-foot birdie putt at the 15th moved him three shots ahead again, and Romero all but clinched the win with a short birdie putt at the 17th hole.
Kite also birdied 17, but it was his only birdie in the last six holes as he failed to develop a serious challenge to Romero.
"Eduardo played awesome," said Kite. "I figured he'd be strong."
With the win, Romero earned $315,000 and moved to third place on the money list behind Jay Haas and Bernhard Langer. He inched ahead of the seven other players who began the week with two wins apiece this season.
All of which puts Romero, a longtime European Tour player, squarely in the conversation for Player of the Year honors.
He started the week feeling sick -- still managing a 68 in the first round Friday -- but felt much better by Sunday. And not just in terms of his health.
"I feel like I can win one or two more (this season)," Romero said.
