Padres continue set with visiting Pirates

(My Sportsbook) - The Pittsburgh Pirates will resume a three-game series against the San Diego Padres tonight at Petco Park.

Pittsburgh ended a four-game slide with Friday's 6-3 win in the series opener, as Ryan Doumit clubbed a three-run homer to lead the way. Freddy Sanchez had three hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice for the Pirates.

Starter Ian Snell gave up one hit -- a solo home run to Nick Hundley -- and struck out five in five innings of work to record the win. He left the game due to a cramp in his right calf.

Jimmy Barthmaier gets the nod for the Bucos on Saturday and will make his third career start. He is 0-1 with a 15.19 earned run average in two starts and did not factor in the outcome of a 6-4 win over Houston on September 20. He gave up two runs in three innings of work.

The right-hander, who allowed seven runs in his major league debut on June 27 in a loss versus Tampa Bay, will face the Padres for the first time.

San Diego has dropped three of four games and will try to get back on track this evening. In Friday's loss to Pittsburgh, Will Venable went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Padres.

Josh Geer allowed one run on three hits over five innings before leaving the game with tightness in his right elbow. Michael Ekstrom absorbed the loss after he surrendered the three-run blast to Doumit in the sixth.

The Friars will hand the ball to Chris Young tonight and he is 6-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 17 starts this season. Young has won two of his previous three trips to the hill and beat Washington the last time out on September 20, allowing just two hits in seven scoreless innings of work.

Young, a righty, is 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates. He has held Pittsburgh to a .126 batting average in that span.

The Pirates lost three of four to the Padres when the clubs met in Pittsburgh from July 24-27. The Bucos are just 4-15 versus San Diego over the past 19 meetings and ended a seven-game slide at Petco Park last night.
