Vazquez takes ball for White Sox vs. Indians

(My Sportsbook) - Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen questioned Javier Vazquez's toughness the last time he took the hill. Tonight he gets a chance to prove his skipper wrong, as the White Sox try and keep their AL Central title hopes alive with the second of three games against the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.

Guillen stated that Vazquez wasn't a big game pitcher prior to his outing against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. The right-hander then proceeded to prove his manager right, as he allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings, dropping him to 12-15 on the year, while raising his earned run average to 4.46.

Vazquez, who has given up 11 earned runs over his last 7 2/3 frames, defeated the Tribe the last time he faced them and is 7-4 lifetime against Cleveland with a 3.91 ERA in 15 starts.

Chicago is going to need a big effort from Vazquez after it blew a golden opportunity to gain ground on the Minnesota Twins in the Central. In the opener of this set on Friday, Ryan Garko hit two homers -- including a grand slam -- to give Cleveland an 11-8 victory.

With the loss, Chicago remains one-half game behind the Minnesota Twins, who swept the White Sox earlier in the week but lost to the Royals Friday night. If the margin in the division is still a half game after Sunday, Chicago will play a make-up game at home against Detroit on Monday.

Garko finished the game 3-for-4 while Ben Francisco also homered for the Indians, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Scott Lewis (4-0) earned the win despite a poor outing, allowing six runs -- four earned -- on six hits in five innings. Jensen Lewis earned his 13th save of the season after getting the last four outs of the game.

John Danks (11-9) struggled, surrendering seven runs on seven hits in four- plus innings to receive the loss.

Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski each homered and drove in a pair of runs for the White Sox, who have now lost seven of nine.

Getting the call for the Indians will be lefty Zach Jackson, who is 1-3 with a 5.96 ERA. Jackson picked up his first win since being acquired from Milwaukee as part of the CC Sabathia deal on Monday in Boston, as he held the Red Sox to a pair of runs and six hits in six innings.

Jackson has never faced the White Sox.

Chicago has won 10 of its 16 matchups with Cleveland this season.
