Diamondbacks send out Haren for big test with Rockies

(My Sportsbook) - The Arizona Diamondbacks wouldn't mind an outing out of Dan Haren today similar to the one he had last time out. Still trailing in the National League West, Haren's club wraps a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

After losing the first game of this series, the Diamondbacks picked up a much- needed 5-3 win on Saturday to remain 3 1/2 games back of the division-leading Dodgers. Los Angeles bested the Giants on Saturday.

Arizona has won five of its last six and got a go-ahead two-run homer by Stephen Drew in the top of the ninth inning during Saturday's win. Drew and Chad Tracy each finished with two hits as the Diamondbacks finally ended their franchise-record 11-game road losing streak.

Expected to team with Brandon Webb to give the Diamondbacks a tough 1-2 punch in the rotation, Haren takes the hill today coming off the first shutout of his career.

The right-hander accomplished the feat versus the Giants on Tuesday, halting a personal four-start winless streak (0-2) in the process. Haren held San Francisco to four hits and two walks while matching his career-high with 12 strikeouts, first set in 2006 with Oakland.

Haren, 28, improved to 15-8 with a 3.24 earned run average in 31 starts and matched his career-high in wins for a season that was set last year.

He is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in four career starts versus the Rockies, but 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two starts against them this year.

The Rockies counter with 22-year-old Greg Reynolds, who faces the Diamondbacks for the first time ever today.

Reynolds was demoted to the minors after a July 4 outing versus Florida in which he allowed seven runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work, and has made two appearances since being recalled in September.

The rookie made his first-ever relief appearance on September 10 in Atlanta, pitching a perfect inning, but was rocked for seven runs on nine hits in just two innings of a start versus the Padres on Monday.

Reynolds is 2-7 with a 7.42 ERA in 13 games this year.

In Saturday's setback, Colorado's Garrett Atkins had a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to tie the game before Drew's homer, while Troy Tulowitzki had three hits and scored twice in the loss. Jeff Baker added a homer for the Rockies, who had a three-game winning streak halted.

The Rockies were without Matt Holliday on Saturday after he was held out of the lineup due to a back ailment. It is unlikely he will play today as well.

Colorado is 4-4 on a nine-game homestand and ends the season with six straight on the road. That includes a season-ending three-game set in Arizona.

Arizona has won 11 of the 14 encounters with Colorado this season and is 6-2 at Coors Field. The Diamondbacks have won six of the last eight meetings in this series.
