Junction City, OR (My Sportsbook) - Matt Bettencourt fired a seven-under 65 Saturday to grab a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the Oregon Classic.
Bettencourt, who is winless on the Nationwide Tour, completed 54 holes at 16- under-par 200. He missed the 54-hole tournament scoring record by one shot.
"I can't get ahead of myself and I know I won't do that," Bettencourt stated. "When I get up there on the first tee, it's like any other round. Just calm down and try to hit a nice tee shot."
Second-round leader Bubba Dickerson birdied the final three holes to end alone in second place at minus-13 after a third-round 70.
Spencer Levin (66) and Brian Smock (68) are tied for third place at 12-under- par 204.
All four players need big weeks as there are just four events left before the Nationwide Tour Championship. Only the top 60 on the money list get into that field. After that event, the top 25 on the money list get their PGA Tour cards for 2009.
Bettencourt started with a birdie on the second. He poured in back-to-back birdie efforts from the fifth to move 12-under.
He birdied the ninth to move into the lead at 13-under. Bettencourt birdied the No. 13 at Shadow Hills Country Club to move two strokes clear of the field.
After three straight pars, Bettencourt rolled in a birdie effort on the 17th and closed with another birdie at 18 to finish at 16-under.
"I've started putting well," said Bettencourt. "It's amazing when you catch the ball on the sweet spot and you keep your head still. You actually hit your lines. It's fun to hit the ball where you're trying to hit it."
Dickerson fell out of the lead early on as he bogeyed the first and fourth. He bounced back with birdies at five and seven.
Another birdie on the ninth moved Dickerson to 12-under. After stumbling to bogeys on 12 and 14, Dickerson ran off three straight birdies from the 16th to finish three back.
"I struggled with my driver a little more today than I have been," Dickerson said. "I managed to steady the ship by the turn. To shoot two-under for the day, I was happy at that point."
Hunter Haas carded a three-under 69 Saturday to move to 10-under-par 206. He shares fifth place with Darron Stiles (72) and Ryan Hietala (70).
Jarrod Lyle, No. 2 on the money list, and Bill Lunde, No. 4 on the money list, are in a group tied for eighth at minus-nine. They were joined there by Arjun Atwal, Clay Ogden, Scott Gutschewski, Gary Christian, Bradley Iles, Won Joon Lee, Alex Prugh and Daniel Summerhays.
