(My Sportsbook) - The
Chicago Cubs will try to inch closer to their second straight National League Central title this afternoon, when they play the rubber match of their three-game series with the
Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs' magic number for clinching the division remained at four on Wednesday, as Prince Fielder finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and three runs batted in to lead Milwaukee to a 6-2 win.
J.J. Hardy collected three hits and knocked in a run for the Brewers, who slammed the brakes on a five-game slide, while Corey Hart drove in two runs.
The Brewers, who still sit a half-game back of the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card race, may have lost starter Ben Sheets, though. The right-hander left after two innings with tightness in his right forearm last night.
Seven Milwaukee relievers combined to limit the Cubs to one run on five hits, with Mark DiFelice (1-0) picking up the win.
Sheets will be further evaluated later in the week.
Aramis Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Cubs, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end but fell for the sixth time in their last seven home games.
Jason Marquis (10-9) absorbed the loss after he gave up three runs on six hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Heading to the hill tonight for the Cubs will be right-hander Rich Harden, who is 5-1 with a 1.65 ERA in his 10 starts with the team. Harden defeated St. Louis last Thursday, as he gave up two runs and five hits in six innings.
Harden beat the Brewers back on July 31 in his only other start against them, surrendering a run and six hits in seven innings.
Milwaukee's hopes, meanwhile, will rest on the right arm of Dave Bush, who is 9-10 with a 4.24 ERA. Bush did not get a decision on Sunday in Philadelphia, as he yielded three runs and five hits in six innings of his team's 7-3 loss.
Bush has struggled mightily in his career against the Cubs, going just 1-7 with a 5.16 ERA in 10 starts. He has also lost the last five times he has faced them.
Chicago has won seven of 12 versus the Brewers this year, but has only taken three of the eight matchups between the teams at Wrigley Field in 2008.
