(My Sportsbook) - The
Kansas City Royals will attempt to extend an impressive streak, while the
Seattle Mariners are hoping to end an unwanted one, when these teams conclude a four-game set this afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals have won six consecutive games, including the first three tests of this series with the hapless Mariners, to match their best run of the season. Kansas City also posted six straight victories during the interleague portion of its schedule from June 21-27.
Kansas City has not won seven in a row since the club strung together a nine- game win streak to start the 2003 season.
Seattle, on the other hand, has now dropped seven straight games following Wednesday's 5-2 setback to the Royals. It was also the ninth consecutive road loss for the Mariners, who are a woeful 26-51 as the visitor this season.
Kansas City trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of last night's test, but scored three times during the frame to forge ahead. Jose Guillen had the biggest hit, a two-run single with two out that snapped a 2-2 tie.
The rally made a winner out of starting pitcher Gil Meche (12-11), who held Seattle to two runs and struck out seven through the first seven innings. Joakim Soria threw a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 40th save of the season.
Mariners starter Ryan Rowland-Smith yielded just one run on three hits over six innings, but he was left with a no-decision after the Seattle bullpen faltered late. Roy Corcoran (5-2) was charged with all three Kansas City runs in the seventh and recorded just two outs before exiting.
Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was 3-for-3 and notched his 200th hit of the year with an infield single in the eighth. The All-Star outfielder tied the major league record set by Willie Keeler (1894-1901) with his eighth consecutive season with at least 200 hits.
Ryan Shealy had a solo homer for the Royals and is batting .500 (11-for-22) with five long balls and 10 RBI during a five-game hitting streak.
Kansas City will aim for its first four-game sweep of the Mariners since August 17-20, 1989 today behind 11-game winner Zack Greinke. The talented young right-hander defeated Seattle with a complete-game gem at Safeco Field back in April, with Greinke firing a five-hitter to lead the Royals to a 5-1 triumph.
The 24-year-old is 2-1 over his three most recent starts and is coming off a winning effort at Cleveland on Saturday. In that 8-3 decision, Greinke allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out five in six innings of work.
Greinke is a solid 5-3 with a 3.16 earned run average in 13 Kauffman Stadium starts this season and 1-0 with a 3.26 ERA over six career games (4 starts) versus Seattle.
The Mariners hand the ball to Ryan Feierabend in the finale. The left-hander has been hit hard since joining the team's rotation in mid-August, as his 1-3 record and 5.79 ERA in six starts will attest. Opponents are batting a robust .343 against him for the year.
Feierabend tossed seven innings of two-run ball against the Yankees on September 6 to pick up his second career victory, but that success didn't carry over to his last start. Against the Angels on Saturday, the 23-year-old was touched for four runs in five innings and took the loss in Seattle's 5-2 defeat.
A third-round selection by Seattle in the 2003 draft, Feierabend started against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 3 of last season. It was a forgettable experience for the youngster, who was shelled for 10 runs on eight hits before being yanked after just 1 1/3 innings.
Kansas City has won six of its eight matchups with the Mariners this season, including five of the six tests played at Kauffman Stadium.
