Geer tries to shift Padres through Rockies

(My Sportsbook) - It's been 15 years since the San Diego Padres last lost 100 games. With 10 contests left on the schedule, the club will try to avoid inching closer to that mark tonight in the finale of a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

San Diego won the opener of this series on Monday, but fell in defeat, 10-3, on Tuesday. That setback dropped the Padres to a National League-worst 58-94 on the season. San Diego hasn't lost 100 games since going 61-101 back in 1993.

Josh Geer was just 10 when that happened, but the now 25-year-old will try to do his part tonight to prevent the Padres from hitting that plateau.

The right-handed Geer is 2-0 with a 3.18 earned run average over his first three major-league starts. He defeated the Rockies with five innings of two- run ball in his debut on August 30, and after a no-decision in Milwaukee he defeated the Giants on Thursday. He held San Francisco to two runs on nine hits over a career-long seven innings.

With Jeff Francis out due to injury, Livan Hernandez returns to Colorado's rotation. The 33-year-old had been sent to the bullpen after allowing four runs over 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus the Braves on Wednesday, but Francis' sore left shoulder opened up a spot.

Hernandez went 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 starts with Minnesota and he hasn't been much better in six starts with Colorado, going 1-3 with a 9.85 ERA.

The 33-year-old, who hasn't won since August 16, is 11-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 23 career starts versus the Padres, who hammered him for nine runs in just 2 2/3 innings of action on August 10.

In Tuesday's win for Colorado, Ubaldo Jimenez threw seven solid innings and Chris Iannetta hit a grand slam to pace the 10-3 win. Iannetta had two hits, while Jeff Baker went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double in the Rockies' second win in three games.

Shawn Estes took the loss and Adrian Gonzalez had a two-run homer for the Padres, who have dropped four of five.

San Diego is 9-8 against Colorado this season and the clubs have split eight tests at Coors Field.
