Gonzalez returns home

(My Sportsbook) - Juan Gonzalez accomplished many things with the Texas Rangers throughout his career, but when he returned to Arlington on Tuesday night for the first time in a Kansas City Royals uniform he received nothing but boos from the crowd of 26,247 at Ameriquest Field.

"You never know with fans," Gonzalez told the Kansas City Star following the Royals' 7-6 come from behind victory over the Rangers. "I played here for 11 years of my 14-year career. I put up some great numbers and went to the playoffs four times."

In his 11 year career with Texas, Gonzalez set club records for homer runs (372) and RBI (1,180) which still stand to this day. He also earned AL most valuable player honors for the 1996 and 1998 season in which he hit a combined 92 home runs and drove in 301 runs.

Gonzalez's path to stardom started after being signed by the Rangers in 1986 as an undrafted free agent. He first reached the major leagues in 1989, playing sparingly his first two seasons. During the 1991 season is when Gonzalez's career really took off, as he saw regular time and produced 102 RBI and 27 home runs. He than proceeded to belt over 40 home runs in each of the next two seasons, planting his name in every Rangers' fan.

Eventually Gonzalez wore out his welcome in Texas and was dealt to the Detroit Tigers in 1999. He spent just one season with the Tigers before signing a one- year deal with the Cleveland Indians as a free agent. After his contract was up in Cleveland, Gonzalez headed back to Texas where he was signed by the Rangers as a free agent in 2002. However, he once again, departed after last season when the Rangers chose not offer him arbitration, leading him to the Royals.

Since signing a one-year deal with the Royals this past January, Gonzalez has yet to regain his form that made him an All-Star in Texas. The 34-year-old hard hitting outfielder is batting a decent .280 this season, but he has only four home runs and 14 RBI in 30 games played.

"It's part of baseball," Gonzalez said about his slow start to the season. "I've been working hard. We'll see what happens."

While Gonzalez has struggled early this season, his track record more than speaks for itself. He is a career .295 hitter which is rare for a man who ranks fifth among active players in homers with 433. Gonzalez has also posted eight seasons of 100-plus RBI, including three of 140-plus RBI, and there is no reason to believe he can't accomplish that feat once again this year.

"There are big expectations. I know he's disappointed but we know what he's capable of," manager Tony Pena said about Gonzalez's early season struggles and his potential to turn things around.

WHO'S HOT

Joe Randa is 6-for-14 with four RBI over his last four games.

Darrell May has allowed just five earned runs over his last two starts, spanning 14 2/3 innings.

WHO'S NOT

Desi Relaford has just one hit in his last 12 at-bats and has only one multi- hit game in the month of May.

Mike Sweeney has only two hits over his last 13 plate appearances.

COMING UP

Following a three-game set in Texas, the Royals will head to Oakland for three straight contests with the Athletics.
