(My Sportsbook) - The playoff-hopeful
Arizona Diamondbacks will open a four- game series versus the
San Francisco Giants this evening at Chase Field.
Arizona is 4 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West division, and has dropped two straight and eight of its last nine games. In Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three-game series, starter Max Scherzer didn't factor into the decision after allowing one run on two hits and three walks in six innings.
Jon Rauch took the loss for surrendering Corey Patterson's homer in the 10th inning, while Justin Upton finished 4-for-5 with a homer to provide the scoring for the Diamondbacks, who will send Doug Davis to the mound in Monday's series opener.
Davis is 6-8 with a 4.53 ERA this season and 2-1 over the past six trips to the mound. Davis has recorded consecutive no-decisions, including a September 9 performance at San Francisco in which he yielded two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 5-4 setback.
The left-hander is 3-5 with a 4.98 earned run average in 13 career meetings, 12 of which have been starts, against the Giants.
San Francisco just won the last three meetings of a four-game series against San Diego and is 9-2 in the past 11 contests. The Giants posted an 8-6 win in 10 innings on Sunday, as Omar Vizquel knocked in two runs and Pablo Sandoval scored the deciding run in the 10th inning to lift San Francisco.
Travis Ishikawa collected three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Giants. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth for the win and Brian Wilson got the final three outs for his 39th save. Starter Barry Zito was rocked for eight hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 4 2/3 innings.
Taking the ball on Monday for the Giants will be Brad Hennessey, who is 1-1 with a 9.64 earned run average this season. Hennessey did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 victory over Arizona the last time out on September 10, yielding one run and four hits in six frames.
The right-hander is 0-2 with a 4.13 ERA in 14 lifetime matchups, four starts, against Arizona.
The 2008 season series between San Francisco and Arizona is tied at 7-7. The Giants recently swept a three-game series with the D'Backs at AT&T Park from September 8-10.
