(My Sportsbook) - The
Chicago White Sox continue their push towards the postseason today with a day/night doubleheader against the
Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field.
This series was slated to get underway on Friday, but rain in the Chicago area caused a postponement. Then, a doubleheader on Saturday was again washed out, making today's twinbill necessary. However, heavy rain is still in forecast for the Chicago area this afternoon.
The Tigers were picked by just about everyone to make the playoffs this season. However, things have not gone as planned and they will have to settle for playing the role of spoiler.
Chicago has slipped into a virtual tie with the Minnesota Twins atop the AL Central thanks to losses in four of its last five games. Minnesota swept a doubleheader from the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday to move into the tie.
Jim Thome clubbed a two-run homer, while Jermaine Dye added a two-run double in the loss for the White Sox, who are still percentage points ahead of the Twins.
The Twins fell to the Royals, 3-2, in 10 innings on Thursday.
Gavin Floyd (15-7) allowed four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss, snapping his career-best five-game winning streak. He had been unbeaten in nine starts since a July 19 setback to Kansas City.
Getting the call for the White in the first game will be righty Javier Vazquez, who has lost three of his last four starts. Vazquez was tagged with the loss, despite a decent effort, on Tuesday against Toronto, as he allowed two runs and five hits in six innings to drop him to 11-13 to go along with a 4.29 ERA.
Vazquez lost to the Tigers the last time he faced them and is 5-7 in his career against them with a 4.93 ERA in 12 starts.
Detroit will counter with hard-throwing right-hander Justin Verlander, who is 10-15 with a 4.78 ERA. Verlander did not factor in the decision of his team's 6-4 win on Saturday in Minnesota, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Verlander has lost to the White Sox four times already this season and is 2-8 lifetime against them with a 6.01 ERA in 13 starts. He is also 0-5 with a 6.14 ERA in seven starts at U.S. Cellular Field.
Detroit will hand the ball in the second game to veteran lefty Kenny Rogers, who is 9-13 with a 5.49 ERA. Rogers hasn't pitched since September 4 against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when he lost his third straight start, surrendering six runs and eight hits in just two innings.
Over his last three starts the 43-year-old Rogers has been tagged for 18 runs in 14 innings.
Rogers is 16-10 lifetime against the White Sox with a 4.30 ERA in 57 games, 33 of which have been starts.
Opposing Rogers in the nightcap will be young lefty John Danks, who is 10-8 with a 3.44 ERA, but is winless in his last four starts. Danks did not get a decision on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as he allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 frames of his team's 3-2 loss.
Danks has faced the Tigers five times and is 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA.
The White Sox have won nine of their 15 meetings with the Tigers this season, including four of six in the Windy City.
