Bridgeview, IL (My Sportsbook) - The United States recorded its sixth successive clean sheet in World Cup qualifying as the team downed Trinidad & Tobago, 3-0 on Wednesday at Toyota Park.
Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey put the Americans up two goals inside of 20 minutes and Brian Ching added a third strike in the second half to give the U.S. three wins from its first three games in the semifinal round of qualifying.
The USA has now gone unbeaten in 11 qualifying matches all time against Trinidad, and they own a five-point lead in Group 1 after three games.
The approach from the USA was much more positive than in the team's previous two games as they committed more men forward and were able to find space behind the Trinidad defense.
It took only nine minutes for the team's early pressure to pay off as DaMarcus Beasley drew a foul on the left wing, setting up a free-kick opportunity for Landon Donovan.
He swung the ball into the middle of the box and Bradley was left unmarked eight yards from goal, allowing the midfielder to redirect the ball with his right foot inside the far post.
Beasley had a hand in the team's second goal as well, which came nine minutes after the opener.
Dempsey got the ball on the right and slipped a pass to Beasley, who quickly returned the ball by pushing it past a Trinidad defender. This allowed Dempsey to get into the box on the right and he drove a low shot past Trinidad goalkeeper Marvin Phillip and inside the far post for a 2-0 U.S. lead.
The Americans were in total control with both Dempsey and Donovan finding plenty of room down the right flank, and Dempsey thought he had earned a penalty kick in the 42nd minute when he got into the box and was knocked down by Trinidad's Cyd Gray, but the referee was not interested.
Trinidad put together a good spell of pressure after halftime, including a header that Steve Cherundolo had to clear off the goal line, but the U.S. quickly regained control of the match with another goal in the 57th minute.
Beasley floated a free kick into the area from the right which drew Phillip off his line, and American defender Oguchi Onyewu got a piece of the ball, allowing it to bounce to a wide open Ching for an easy tap in.
Trinidad had a goal called back for offsides minutes later, but they never seriously threatened after that and the home team coasted the rest of the way.
The Americans next qualifying match comes at home on October 11 against Cuba, a team they beat 1-0 away from home on September 6.
