Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - AIR FORCE: Quarterback Shea Smith ran for one of the team's two touchdowns as the Falcons posted a 23-3 win over the Wyoming Cowboys in Mountain West Conference play in Laramie. Smith converted just 3-of-4 pass attempts for 15 yards and was intercepted once in the decision. Kicker Ryan Harrison stepped up and knocked through all three of his field goal attempts to secure the hard-fought victory. Game three on the Falcons' schedule has them facing off against the Houston Cougars in non-conference play at Robertson Stadium this weekend. The game marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
BYU: The Cougars escaped Washington with a narrow 28-27 win over the Huskies on Saturday afternoon. Washington could have easily sent the game into overtime with just two seconds to play after quarterback Jake Locker took the ball into the end zone for the home team, but the ensuing PAT was pushed back 15 yards because of a penalty, allowing the visitors to bring a strong push up the middle and block the kick that could have tied the contest. Quarterback Max Hall threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns, while Harvey Unga survived a crucial fumble in the waning moments with 136 yards on 23 carries for the victors. For the third time in the last two seasons, the Cougars will be challenging the UCLA Bruins this weekend, this time in Provo. Last season, BYU lost to the Bruins on the road in the second game of the season (27-17) but then made amends with a 17-16 victory during the Las Vegas Bowl.
COLORADO STATE: True freshman Ben DeLine knocked through a 20-yard field goal at the end of regulation to give Colorado State and new head coach Steve Fairchild a 23-20 win against Sacramento State on Saturday. The victory in his home debut means Fairchild is the first head coach since 1989 to post a victory in his first game in Fort Collins. Even though the Rams converted 12- of-15 on third down and generated 416 yards of total offense, it was still crucial that DeLine converted all three of his field goal attempts in the final period. The Rams catch a break this week with a bye, getting back to action on September 20th versus the Houston Cougars at home. In three previous meetings CSU has not lost to Houston.
NEW MEXICO: Rodney Ferguson ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday, but his efforts still were not enough to keep the Lobos from falling into the loss column in a 28-22 setback to Texas A&M. Quarterback Donovan Porterie converted 22-of-35 passes for just 154 yards and was picked off twice on the day. The Lobos face off against a familiar foe this weekend in Arizona. The teams have met 66 times previously, with the Wildcats posting a 43-19-3 mark in the series. The game takes place in Albuquerque where Arizona has a record of 21-9-2 over the years. A 29-27 win for the Lobos last season in Tucson snapped a nine-game slide for the team versus Pac-10 opponents. The series is the third-oldest on the books for UNM, dating back to 1908.
SAN DIEGO STATE: Ryan Lindley converted 29-of-59 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown, but his efforts failed to keep the Aztecs from bowing to Notre Dame on the road, 21-13. In addition to losing a fumble just before crossing the goal line late in the game, SDSU also hurt itself with 11 penalties, resulting in a loss of 100 yards. The fact that San Diego State gained a mere 71 yards rushing on 15 attempts didn't help matters either. Next up for the Aztecs is an in-state clash with the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday. SJSU won the most recent meeting two seasons ago by a score of 31-10, snapping what had been a seven-game win streak for SDSU in the series. Overall, the Spartans maintain a 17-15-2 mark versus the Aztecs since 1935.
TCU: Even though it was against a much weaker opponent, the Horned Frogs still had no qualms about running up a 67-7 score versus Stephen F. Austin on Saturday night in Fort Worth. TCU, which held a commanding 42-7 advantage at the break after scoring on its first five possessions, came within a point of tying the school's all-time single-game record for points set against Austin College back in 1932. The running game accounted for seven touchdowns, three of which were tallied by Joseph Turner on nine carries. The combination of Andy Dalton and Marcus Jackson accounted for 17-of-24 passing for 205 yards and a score in the onslaught. The Horned Frogs play Stanford this weekend for the second time in as many seasons. Last year the teams opened their relationship on the football field with a narrow 38-36 decision that fell in favor of the Cardinal.
UNLV: Trying to match their win total from all of last year, the UNLV Rebels showed some fight in the early going against Utah in a Mountain West Conference bout on Saturday night, but in the end the Utes were simply too strong in all facets of the game, sending UNLV to the 42-21 loss. Omar Clayton had his moments as he connected on 19-of-30 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, but it was running back Frank Summers who gave the Utes the most trouble, especially in the first half. Summers finished the night with a team- best 87 yards and two touchdown runs on 23 carries for the losing squad. UNLV finished with just 288 yards of total offense on 65 plays, compared to the home team which ran four fewer plays and was still allowed to generate 440 yards in all. On tap this weekend for the Rebels is coach Dennis Erickson and his Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
UTAH: Unlike last week against Michigan when the Utah offense looked out-of- sorts in the second half, the squad appeared more focused following the break this past Saturday as it ran off with a 42-21 win over UNLV at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Quarterback Brian Johnson threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for a third in the revenge matchup from last year when the Rebels shut out Utah by a score of 27-0. Running back Matt Asiata, who again took a number of direct snaps from the center, ran for one score and threw for a second as three different receivers found the end zone for the Utes. The Utes suit up against a very familiar foe this weekend in Utah State, marking a continuation of the oldest rivalry in Utah history. At 107 games, this relationship is also the 12th longest in the nation, with Utah having played its very first game versus the Aggies back in 1892. The Utes, who have won 10 straight versus USU, lead the series by a count of 75-28-4 and are 24-11 in Logan over the years. Last season Utah posted a 34-18 win in the annual meeting.
WYOMING: The Cowboys offense was almost nowhere to be found on Saturday as the program fell in a 23-3 decision, marking the team's 1,000th game in it's 112- year history. Quarterbacks Dax Crum and Karsten Sween combined to hit just 8- of-22 passes for 76 yards, with the former being sacked four times and intercepted once. Gabe Knapton was one of three players on the squad with double-digit tackles, coming up with a game-high 16 stops in the setback. For the first-time ever, the Wyoming Cowboys take on North Dakota State on the gridiron this weekend. This is the first of two opponents that the Pokes will be encountering for the first time this season, the other being Bowling Green later this month.
