Cook hopes to continue strong season against Giants

(My Sportsbook) - Right-hander Aaron Cook can continue adding to a career- high in victories today when the Colorado Rockies host the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series at Coors Field.

Cook, a 29-year-old product of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, had won a personal- best nine games over 32 starts with the Rockies in 2006 before sliding to eight wins in 25 outings en route to a World Series appearance last season.

He's blown that total away in 2008, however, racking up 11 wins by the All- Star break in mid-July and going 4-2 in seven starts since returning from the Mid-summer Classic.

Win No. 16 came Friday in San Diego, where he allowed five hits and two runs in six innings of a 9-4 defeat of the Padres.

He's gone 2-1 in three starts against the Giants this season, tossing 21 innings and allowing 29 hits and seven runs, and is 6-7 in 22 games - 17 starts - against them in his career.

San Francisco lefty Barry Zito is 5-4 in 10 starts since an ugly 4-12 beginning to the season.

The 30-year-old Las Vegas native was ripped by the Cincinnati Reds in his last start on Friday, but had won consecutive games against Atlanta and San Diego on August 18 and 23 while surrendering just nine hits and three runs in 15 innings.

He's not faced Colorado this season, but is 1-1 against the Rockies in five career starts with a 2.73 ERA.

Zito is 5-6 on the road in 13 starts in 2008.

On Tuesday, Ryan Spilborghs singled in the winning run in the 12th inning, lifting Colorado to a 6-5 win. Troy Tulowitzki clubbed a two-run homer and Omar Quintanilla added a pair of hits and two runs scored.

It was the fourth straight home win for the Rockies, who've won seven of 10 overall.

Despite a 66-74 record, the defending National League champions are hanging around in the playoff race. The Rockies are five games behind Arizona for first place in the NL West.

Jason Grilli (3-1) pitched the final three innings for the win, while Keiichi Yabu (3-6) was tagged with the loss.

Omar Vizquel had three RBI for the Giants, losers of five in a row.

Tim Lincecum, who was gunning for his 16th win of the year, yielded five hits and five runs over five innings. He also had six strikeouts for the Giants.

Livan Hernandez surrendered five hits and four runs over the first 5 1/3 innings for Colorado.

Colorado has won eight of its 14 matchups with the Giants this season.
