Braves, Marlins wrap up wild series in South Beach

(My Sportsbook) - Lanky right-handed rookie Chris Volstad faces Atlanta for the second time in his brief major league career today when the Florida Marlins host the Braves in the finale of a three-game series at Dolphin Stadium.

Florida's first pick (16th overall) in the 2005 draft, Volstad dropped a 4-0 verdict to the Braves for his first major league loss on July 21 after opening his big-league stay with a pair of wins in two appearances.

Volstad's since gone 2-2 in seven subsequent starts, including five outings in which he's surrendered three earned runs or less.

He got a tough-luck no-decision in his last appearance on August 29, allowing five hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings of a game the Marlins eventually lost, 5-4.

Volstad is 1-2 in five home starts with a 4.13 earned run average in 28 1/3 innings.

He'll be opposed by Mexican export Jorge Campillo, who allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings in the July 21 matchup against Volstad and the Marlins.

A 30-year-old right-hander, Campillo struck out six and walked one in the meeting with Florida, but has since won just twice in seven appearances while his ERA has risen from 2.83 to 3.61.

He was thumped, 7-3, by the Washington Nationals on Aug. 29 and allowed eight hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Campillo's last win came August 8 against Arizona.

He is 4-3 with a complete game and a 2.97 ERA in 63 2/3 innings on the road this season.

On Tuesday, Ruben Gotay doubled home the game-winning run in the ninth to give the Braves a wild 16-14 victory in the middle test of this series. Kelly Johnson and Omar Infante both had four hits, with Johnson driving in four runs and Infante two.

Six players had multi-hit games for the Braves, who despite the win have still lost 17 of 22 games.

Charlie Morton didn't fare very well, allowing seven runs -- four earned -- on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts. Jorge Julio (1-0) picked up the win despite giving up the game-tying run in the eighth.

Mike Gonzalez got his eighth save of the year and his 38th consecutive save, the longest active streak in the majors.

Alfredo Amezaga drove in five runs on two hits and Cody Ross went 3-for-5 for the Marlins, losers in four of six.

Anibal Sanchez struggled through only three innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four. Matt Lindstrom (3-3) suffered the loss for the second straight game after giving up two runs in the ninth.

Atlanta is 10-7 against Florida this season.
