(My Sportsbook) - Right-hander Josh Johnson can follow up the best performance of his career with another gem against the same opponent today, when the
Florida Marlins entertain the visiting
Atlanta Braves for the first test of a three-game series at Dolphin Stadium.
Johnson, who was limited to just four starts last year because of injury and didn't debut this season until July, tossed his first career complete game against the Braves on August 27 in Atlanta, holding the Braves to just four hits and a run while striking out eight batters in Florida's 4-1 triumph.
He is 4-0 in his nine-start comeback in 2008, having allowed three earned runs or less eight times and hitting the eight-strikeout mark three times.
The Marlins are 7-2 in games in which Johnson has pitched and will need another victory to maintain any semblance of contention in the National League's East Division. They are seven games behind the front-running New York Mets in the division standings.
Johnson, 24, is 3-1 lifetime with a 2.18 earned run average in 45 1/3 innings against Atlanta.
For the Braves, injury-riddled veteran Mike Hampton makes his eighth start of the season. The oft-injured Florida native was on the shelf for all of 2006 and 2007 before returning with a four-inning effort against Philadelphia on July 26.
He is 2-2 in six subsequent starts, including an eight-inning outing on the short end of Johnson's complete-game masterpiece in Atlanta on August 27. In that game, Hampton allowed eight hits and three runs in his longest stint since his return.
In 40 overall innings, Hampton has allowed 47 hits and 26 runs while striking out 17 batters.
Lifetime against the Marlins, he is 10-7 with a 4.48 ERA in 148 2/3 innings.
On Sunday in Washington, Aaron Boone hit the go-ahead three-run homer and added an RBI single to lead the Nationals to an 8-4 win and a three-game sweep of the Braves.
For Atlanta, Jair Jurrjens gave up five hits and three runs in six innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks. Elmer Dessens (0-1) was ripped for four hits and five runs while recording just one out in the eighth inning for the Braves, who have dropped four of five.
Yunel Escobar belted a three-run homer in the fourth to put Atlanta on top, but it wouldn't hold up against Washington.
In Miami, Pedro Martinez rebounded from a tough first inning to throw six strong frames and the Mets downed the Marlins, 6-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Scott Olsen (6-9) was rocked for six runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and one walk. Olsen has not won since July 19, going 0-5 over his last eight starts -- all of them losses for the Marlins.
Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and scored for Florida, which has dropped four of six.
Atlanta is 9-6 against Florida this season.
