Pebble Beach, CA (My Sportsbook) - Loren Roberts birdied the 18th hole Saturday to remain tied for the lead after two rounds of the Wal-Mart First Tee Open.
Roberts posted a three-under 69 to finish 36 holes at nine-under-par 135. He was joined in the lead by Phil Blackmar (68), Jeff Sluman (66) and John Harris (66).
With two courses in use this week, only Harris played Del Monte in the second round. The other three leaders competed at Pebble Beach, which will host the final round.
That group is one clear of Craig Stadler, who won this title in 2004. Stadler carded a six-under 66 to finish two rounds at minus-eight.
Both the first and second rounds were completed on Saturday after play at Pebble Beach was delayed several times on Friday due to fog.
Roberts had a steady round with birdies on four and six to go with seven pars on the front nine. Around the turn, he grabbed a share of the lead with a birdie on the par-five 14th.
However, Roberts gave that stroke back as he tripped to a bogey on the par- four 16th. He atoned for that error with a 22-foot birdie putt at the last to remain one of the leaders.
Roberts had shared the lead after the opening round with Fuzzy Zoeller, Hale Irwin, Chip Beck and Andy Bean.
Blackmar played the back nine first at Pebble and was even-par for his first nine holes with seven pars, a bogey and a birdie.
On the front side, Blackmar birdied the par-five second to move to minus-six. He rolled home three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the fifth to get into the clubhouse first at nine-under.
"Yesterday, I hit it as good as I can hit it and never made a putt over six- feet," Blackmar admitted. "Today, not quite as good, but I kept it in play. The birdie at No. 2 really got me going."
Sluman converted back-to-back birdies to open his round. A birdie on the sixth moved him to minus-six. Around the turn, Sluman posted three more birdies to grab a share of the lead.
Harris had a hot start on the back nine at Del Monte. He birdied three of the first four holes from the 10th to move to six-under. After a birdie at 15, Harris tripped to a bogey on the 16th.
He atoned for that mistake with three consecutive birdies around the turn. Harris stumbled to another bogey at the par-three fourth. He got that stroke back and grabbed a piece of the lead with a birdie on the eighth.
Fred Funk (70)and Steve Thomas (70) are tied for sixth at seven-under-par 137.
Zoeller managed an even-par 72 at Pebble Beach to slip into a share of eighth at minus-six. Irwin, the Champions Tour's all-time wins leader, was one stroke further back at five-under 139 after faltering to a one-over 73.
Beck posted a two-over 74 and is tied for 17th at minus-four, while Bean birdied his final two holes to salvage a round of three-over 75. That left him tied for 22nd at three-under-par 141.
