Royals aim to halt slide in Motown

(My Sportsbook) - The Kansas City Royals will try to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak this evening, when they play the second test of a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Kansas City has dropped 11 of 12 and 18 of its last 21 contests, including Friday's 6-3 setback in the opener of this set. Mark Teahen homered and Mike Aviles added three hits and an RBI for the Royals, who were fresh off a three- game sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers.

Starter Kyle Davies lost his fourth consecutive start and gave up six runs -- two earned -- on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Royals fell to 27-39 away from home this season because of the effort by Davies.

Set to take the hill for the Royals tonight will be Brandon Duckworth, who will make his second appearances of the 2008 season. Duckworth made his 2008 debut on August 24 versus these Tigers after being recalled from Triple-A Omaha, and collected his first major league win as a starter in more than two years.

Duckworth allowed three runs in five innings of a 7-3 win over Detroit at Kauffman Stadium. It was just his fifth start in two years and first major league win as a starter since beating Milwaukee on June 24, 2006. Duckworth hadn't recorded a victory in the majors since last September as a relief pitcher against Chicago.

The right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA in five career games (four starts) against the Tigers.

Detroit ended a four-game slide with last night's win, as Curtis Granderson and Jeff Larish each had two RBI for the Tigers, who are 1-3 on a 10-game homestand and 34-31 as the host this season. Starting pitcher Zach Miner tossed six solid innings and allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters.

Tigers slugging third baseman Miguel Cabrera is listed as day-to-day after leaving Friday's game in the sixth inning with a mild left pectoral strain. He is batting .287 with 28 homers and 100 RBI in his first season with Detroit.

Tigers veteran Kenny Rogers will square off with Duckworth and the Royals again, as he suffered the loss on August 24 -- his last trip to the rubber. Rogers fell to 9-11 with a 5.09 ERA in 27 starts after giving up seven runs -- six earned -- and eight hits in six frames.

Rogers, a left-hander, has dropped five of his last six outings. He is 21-19 in 59 career games, 38 starts, with a 4.13 earned run average against Kansas City.

KC leads the season series with Detroit by a 7-6 margin, with a 3-1 ledger in the Motor City. The Royals swept the Tigers at Comerica Park to kick off the 2008 campaign from March 31-April 3.
