San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - Former big league managers Davey Lopes and Tony Muser have been added to the San Diego Padres coaching staff for the 2003 season. Lopes, who managed the Milwaukee Brewers for two two-plus seasons, was named first base coach. Muser, who managed the Kansas City Royals for the past five-plus years, was hired as bench coach. Lopes spent five seasons as the Padres first base coach before accepting the Brewers managerial position before the 1999 season. In 16 seasons as a player, Lopes hit .263 with 155 home runs, 614 RBI and 557 stolen bases. He has also served on coaching staffs in Texas and Baltimore. Muser returns to the National League for the first time since a five-season stint as a coach with the Cubs (1993-97). Muser played parts of nine big league seasons with Boston, the White Sox, Baltimore and Milwaukee. San Diego also named Dave Magadan hitting coach and Rob Picciolo third base coach for Bruce Bochy's staff. Pitching coach Greg Booker and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds will return in the same roles they held last season.
