Beijing, China (My Sportsbook) - The United States men's team will try to get back to the top of the
basketball world, as they face Spain Sunday at Wukesong Arena in the gold medal contest of the 2008 Olympics.
The Americans and Spaniards are meeting for the second time in the Beijing Games. LeBron James led eight U.S. players in double figures with 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds as Team USA earned a convincing 119-82 victory over Spain in pool play on August 16.
"We have to have a better mentality," said Spanish coach Aito Garcia. "We didn't have the best before, and I hope now we do."
This will be the 10th meeting between the U.S. and Spain in Olympic competition. The Americans have won each of the previous nine, including a triumph in the gold medal game at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. The silver medal marked Spain's best finish -- and only medal -- in Olympic competition.
The United States (7-0) is trying to capture the gold medal for the 13th time overall and the first time since 2000, all while erasing the bitter memory of the bronze-medal finish from the 2004 Games in Athens.
A semifinal loss to Argentina four years ago denied the Americans a chance at gold and this group avenged that setback on Friday with 101-81 victory over the Argentines. Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points in the win for the Americans, while James ended with 15 points and five rebounds.
NBA MVP Kobe Bryant finished with 12 points and big man Chris Bosh contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for the United States, which shot 47.1 percent from the floor.
Argentina suffered a huge loss in the first quarter, as star guard Manu Ginobili went down with an ankle injury. Still, the Argentines trimmed a 21- point deficit to six in the first half before the Americans pulled away after the intermission.
"They're (Argentina) a tough team," said Bryant. "They're mentally tough. They don't give up. They continue to play hard, which we knew. It was a great game for us because we played well, had a big lead. The hardest thing about giving up a big lead is to then push it out again, which we were able to do. I think that shows what (Jerry) Colangelo has been trying to do for the last three years, is build a team because when you have a team that is that tight and that close and plays so well together, then you are able to withstand huge runs from a great team like Argentina."
Spain (6-1) earned its way into the gold medal game with a 91-86 victory over Lithuania. Pau Gasol scored 19 points and Rudy Fernandez netted 18 in the victory for Spain, which is at least guaranteed a silver medal.
"It will definitely be a difficult game," said USA guard Chris Paul about the gold medal contest. "It's no secret what our strength is -- pressure defense. We'll worry about us instead of worrying about them."
Bryant and Gasol are teammates for the Lakers, who advanced to the NBA Finals where they fell in six games to the Boston Celtics.
"I think he's (Gasol) been fantastic," said Bryant about his NBA teammate's play in the Olympics. "I'm very happy for him. I'm proud of him. It should be a fun game on Sunday."
Prior to the gold medal game, Lithuania (5-2) and Argentina (5-2) will battle for the bronze medal.
