Davie, FL (My Sportsbook) -
Miami Dolphins quarterback Ray Lucas is expected to start Sunday's AFC East showdown against the
New York Jets, despite a right shoulder injury. He took nearly all the reps in practice on Friday.
"Ray was very sharp," said Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt. "In fact it's probably about as sharp as we've thrown the ball in four or five weeks. He took all of the snaps that he normally would have. He took basically all of them. We threw and caught the ball today as well as we have in four or five Fridays. We're ready to go."
Lucas was injured in the second quarter of Monday night's 24-10 loss to Green Bay and had an MRI exam, which revealed no broken bones or tears in the shoulder. He sat out the end of the first half, but returned to start the third quarter and finished 22-of-39 for 198 yards with two interceptions -- one of which went the other way for a Green Bay touchdown.
"I can't turn the ball over, especially for a touchdown when we are that close, driving the ball," Lucas said Friday. "I have to get better every day. That is what I have to do. We have to win."
Lucas has started the last two games for Miami, replacing the injured Jay Fiedler, who is expected to miss at least another two games because of a broken right thumb.
The Dolphins are 0-2 since Fiedler was hurt. Lucas had a dismal outing in a loss to Buffalo on October 20, throwing four interceptions in his first NFL start since 1999 when he was with the Jets.
"Ray just has to play efficiently," Wannstedt added. "He has to protect the football make good decisions and play efficiently. That's all. He was doing that last week. We have to help him. We have to hold on to the ball and when there is a catch to be made, we have to catch. When there is a block to be made and somebody is open, we have to give him time to make the throw."
Miami has reportedly made inquiries into the possibility of luring former Dallas Cowboys star Troy Aikman out of retirement, but Wannstedt shot those rumors down Friday.
"The Aikman thing is just a rumor,"Wannstedt said. "I've had no conversations and no one else has in the organization. This is a fragile league. You win one game and you're going to the Super Bowl. You lose one game and, 'oh my goodness how are we ever going to win another one.'"
Sage Rosenfels will remain the backup to Lucas. Rosenfels was 0-for-3 passing in his first NFL game on Monday, before Lucas came back into the contest for the second half.
Rosenfels is in his second NFL season. The former Iowa State star was acquired from the Washington Redskins just before the season.
Miami's third-string quarterback is Dave Dickenson.
