Cincinnati, OH (My Sportsbook) - Brian Moehler was solid on the hill and Miguel Tejada hit a solo home run, as the
Houston Astros edged the
Cincinnati Reds, 3-1, in the third test of a four-game set.
Moehler (8-4) gave up one run on five hits and fanned three over seven frames to get the win. Jose Valverde tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 28th save of the year.
Lance Berkman drove in a run for the Astros, who have won seven of their last nine to pull within two games of .500 at 57-59.
Bronson Arroyo (10-9) was saddled with the loss despite a decent outing of two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks over six innings.
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games for the Reds, who matched a season-high by dropping their fifth straight game. Edwin Encarnacion knocked in the lone run for Cincy.
Houston jumped on top, 1-0, in the first inning. Kazuo Matsui led off with a walk, moved to second as Tejada singled and crossed home when Berkman followed with a single.
The Astros were dealt a blow in the third inning as Carlos Lee was hit by an Arroyo slider on his left pinky finger and had to leave the game. Darin Erstad pinch ran and took over in left field for the slugger. Further tests revealed that the finger was broken, and Lee will be evaluated on Monday.
Moehler opened the fifth stanza with a double, advanced to third on Matsui's sac bunt and scored as Arroyo uncorked a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Tejada belted a solo homer over the fence in right field to give Houston a 3-0 cushion in the seventh.
The Reds got on the board in the home half. Bruce and Brandon Phillips connected on one-out singles and Adam Dunn flied out to move Bruce to third. Encarnacion then ripped a grounder to Tejada, who couldn't field the ball, and Bruce crossed the plate to make it 3-1.
Game Notes
Adam Rosales, who had his contract purchased prior to the game after the Reds placed Joey Votto on the bereavement list, flied out in the sixth. It was his major-league debut...Houston has won seven of its eight meetings with Cincinnati this season and 11 of the last 12 overall in the series. The Astros are 35-19 versus the Reds since the start of the 2005 season.
