(My Sportsbook) - Jason Johnson will try to pitch the
Los Angeles Dodgers back into the win column tonight in the second test of a three-game series versus the
San Francisco Giants at Chavez Ravine.
Johnson has faced the Giants twice in his career and owns a 2-0 record with a 1.20 ERA while holding them to a .241 batting average. The right-hander will make his first start of the season and is 0-0 with a 2.57 earned run average in a pair of relief appearances since recently being called up from the minors.
He last took the hill on July 22 at Colorado and did not factor in the outcome of a 10-1 loss, permitting one run and two hits in four innings of work.
Johnson will try for his first major league win since the 2006 season for the Dodgers, who had a three-game winning streak halted in Monday's 7-6 setback in the series opener. LA remained one game behind Arizona for the NL West lead after the Diamondbacks lost to San Diego last night.
New Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake had two hits and two runs scored, while Mark Sweeney had a pinch-hit two-run double in the loss. Andre Ethier and Angel Berroa had an RBI and a run scored apiece for Los Angeles, which was coming off a three-game weekend sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda was shelled for seven runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings in taking the loss.
San Francisco got back in the win column after last night's win, as Fred Lewis and Jose Castillo each added RBI hits during a decisive five-run fourth inning. Lewis and Castillo each had two RBI for San Francisco, which suffered a three-game weekend sweep at the hands of Arizona prior to Monday's win. The Giants are nine games off the pace in the soft NL West division.
Giants starter Kevin Correia was hit around for six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits over 5 1/3 frames, but got help from his bullpen to get a victory. Correia picked up a win for the first time in his last 10 starts and also helped his own cause with a two-run single.
Taking the ball tonight for the Giants will be Matt Cain, who is coming off his best outing of the season. Cain hurled a four-hit shutout on Thursday versus the Nationals, allowing four hits and no walks with four strikeouts. The righty recorded his first shutout since 2006 and second of his career.
Cain is winless (0-4) in seven career starts against the Dodgers, with a 5.30 earned run average over that stretch.
Los Angeles leads the 2008 season series with the Giants by a 4-3 count. It won two of three games versus San Francisco at Dodger Stadium earlier this season, from March 31-April 2.
