Nimes, France (My Sportsbook) - Mark Cavendish of Great Britain outsprinted a large pack to the finish line and captured Stage 13 of the 2008 Tour de France, while Australia's Cadel Evans remained the overall leader of cycling's most prestigious event.
Cavendish earned his fourth stage win of this year's Tour, having previously won the fifth, eighth and 12th stages. He completed Friday's 182 kilometer trek from Narbonne to Nimes in a time of four hours, 25 minutes and 42 seconds.
Evans finished 37th in the main pack of 71 riders that were credited with the same time as the stage winner. He remained one second ahead of Luxembourg's Frank Schleck in the overall standings. Schleck was also among the main pack, placing 61st.
American Christian Vande Velde is still third overall, 38 seconds behind Evans after winding up 29th in Friday's stage. Bernhard Kohl of Austria is still fourth overall, 46 seconds behind, while Russia's Denis Menchov is another 11 seconds behind in fifth.
Spain's Carlos Sastre is sixth, 1:28 off the pace, followed by Luxembourg's Kim Kirchen, who held the yellow jersey for four days before Evans captured it in Stage 10 on Monday. Kirchen is 1:56 behind Evans.
Sylvain Chavanel of France took the lead about seven kilometers before the finish line, but was caught by the peloton with about three kilometers remaining.
Cavendish, boxed in with about 200 meters to go, found a way to the front of the pack and outraced everyone to the line, beating Australia's Robbie McEwen by just over a bike length.
Stage 14 on Saturday is a 194.5 kilometer jaunt from Nimes to Digne-les-bains in the foothills of the Alps.
