Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Former United States national team captain and Red Bull New York midfielder Claudio Reyna will retire Wednesday, according to a report on ESPNsoccernet on Tuesday.

Reyna, 34, played for the United States from 1994-2006. He made 112 appearances for the U.S., scoring eight goals and contributing 19 assists. He spent most of his club career in Europe before joining Major League Soccer last season.

The Red Bulls have scheduled a news conference on Wednesday at 2 p.m. (ET) when Reyna is expected to announce his retirement.

Reyna signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract as a designated player to join the Red Bulls before the start of last season but played in just 27 matches due to numerous injuries.

After playing in 21 games last season, Reyna appeared in just six matches this year. Reyna's retirement should free up a designated player spot for New York, which will be searching for replacements for him and forward Jozy Altidore, who recently transferred to Spain's Villarreal.

Reyna's career in Europe lasted from 1994-2007 and included stops in England, Germany and Scotland.
