Romero claims second Champions Tour win

Endicott, NY (My Sportsbook) - Argentina's Eduardo Romero carded a three- under 69 Sunday to pick up his second Champions Tour title at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

Romero completed the event at 18-under-par 199. That total matched the tournament scoring record that R.W. Eaks set last year. Romero's other win came in 2006 at the JELD-WEN Tradition.

"It was a very important win for me. I worked hard for this victory," Romero stated. "I played fantastic this week, especially today. It was a lot of pressure to play with Joey Sindelar, but I played very good. I am very, very happy."

Fulton Allem also carded a 69 to share second place at 16-under-par 200. He was joined there by Gary Koch, who closed with a seven-under 65.

Sindelar, the local favorite, closed with a bogey on 17 and a double-bogey at the last to end alone in fourth at minus-14 after a 71 in the final round.

Romero led by one at the start of the round and sank a three-foot birdie putt at the second to push his lead to two.

Allem drained back-to-back birdie putts from the fourth to grab a share of the lead at minus-15. However, he missed the green at the seventh and that led to a bogey.

Romero had the lead again and he would not be caught. He birdied the eighth, as did both of his playing partners -- Allem and Sindelar.

The Argentine stuck his approach four feet from the hole at the 10th and he sank that birdie putt to stay one up on Allem, whose nearly holed his second shot to the par-four.

Allem tripped to a bogey on the 11th to fall two back at En-Joie Golf Club.

Romero got up and down for birdie on the par-five 12th to keep his two-shot lead and move to 18-under. After an up-and-down par on 13, he faltered to a bogey on the 14th.

He recovered that lost stroke with a two-putt birdie on the short par-four 16th.

Romero made things interesting, though. At the 17th, Sindelar tripped to a bogey to slide two back, but Romero missed a four-footer for par.

That left him one ahead with one to go. Romero only needed a two-putt par from seven feet to secure the win after Sindelar made a mess of the hole and Allem's birdie try came up short.

Allem had birdied the 12th, but closed with six straight pars.

Sindelar played steady with four birdies through 16 holes and trailed by one at that point. However, he missed the green at 17 and that led to a bogey.

At the last, his tee ball found the right trees and he hit a tree with his second, then had to take a drop from a cart path. He left his third shot short, then pitched on and two-putted for a closing double-bogey.

Koch carded a bogey-free round of 65, that included seven birdies, to grab his share of second place.

Bruce Vaughan (69) and Joe Ozaki (70) shared fifth place at 13-under-par 203. Ronnie Black, Bob Gilder and Morris Hatalsky were one stroke further back at minus-12.
