Boyle waives no-trade clause, headed to San Jose

San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - The San Jose Sharks acquired defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defensemen Matt Carle and Ty Wishart.

The Sharks also gave up a first-round pick in 2009 and a fourth-round selection in 2010.

Boyle had to waive his no-trade clause in order for the deal to be completed.

"Dan is one of the elite offensive-minded defensemen in the league today," said Sharks executive vice president and general manager Doug Wilson.

Boyle, who signed a six-year, $40 million extension just before the trade deadline in February, was limited to four goals in 37 games last season thanks to a freak accident. A skate fell on him in the locker room in the preseason, severely cutting his wrist.

A member of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2004, Boyle has registered 76 goals and 216 assists in 523 career games with Florida and Tampa Bay.

Lukowich registered a goal and seven points in 59 games last season with the Bolts.

"Brad is a tough competitor that isn't afraid to give up his body for the sake of the team," Wilson said. "He has won two Stanley Cups (Dallas in 1999 and Tampa Bay in 2004) and he knows that everyone on a team needs to play a role in order to achieve the ultimate success."

Originally selected by the New York Islanders in the fourth round (90th overall) of the 1994 draft, Lukowich has 22 goals and 81 assists in 582 career games with the Stars, Islanders, Devils and Lightning.

The Lightning obtained a pair of promising young defensemen in Carle and Wishart.

Carle was a standout at Denver University and won the Hobey Baker Award as the top U.S. collegiate player in 2006. Drafted 47th overall by San Jose in 2003, he has posted 16 goals and 47 assists in 151 NHL games.

"We really feel that Matt will have tremendous success in this league," Wilson added. "But you have to give to get and we felt that this move will ultimately help us get to where we want to get."

Wishart was the 16th overall pick in the 2006 draft and split last season between Prince George and Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League, registering 67 points to lead all defensemen.

"We wish Ty the best in his development," said Wilson. "We feel he has a bright future ahead of him and wish him the best."
