Omaha, NE (My Sportsbook) - Michael Phelps officially punched his ticket to Beijing Sunday night in incredible fashion, winning the 400-meter individual medley with a world-record time of 4 minutes, 5.25 seconds at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.
It was the first of two world marks set Sunday. Katie Hoff is bound for Beijing too following her world-record time of 4 minutes, 31.12 seconds in the final of the women's 400-meter individual medley.
In Phelps' race, Ryan Lochte finished in 4:06.08, with that also under the previous world mark. Phelps held the previous world record at 4:06.22, set at last year's world championships in Australia.
Phelps is entered in eight events at the trials. A winner of six gold medals and two bronze in 2004, Phelps could be sizing up the Olympic record of seven gold medals won at a single Summer Games, that was accomplished by Mark Spitz in Munich in 1972.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Beijing Olympics, which begin on August 8.
The 19-year-old Hoff and Elizabeth Beisel finished 1-2 in the women's 400- meter individual medley and are headed to Beijing. Four years ago, Hoff was the youngest member of the entire U.S. delegation at 15 years, 2 months, as she finished seventh in the 200-meter IM at the Athens Games.
Larsen Jensen won the final of the 400-meter freestyle in an American-record 3 minutes, 43.53 seconds and is headed to his second Summer Games. Jensen won the silver medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle in Athens.
Peter Vanderkaay, gold medalist in the 800-meter freestyle at the 2004 Olympics, is also going to China as he finished second in Sunday's final of the 400 freestyle.
Christine Magnuson topped the list of qualifiers for the women's 100-meter butterfly final by finishing the semifinals in 57.50 seconds. Elaine Breeden won her heat in 58.04 seconds for the second-best time. The final will be Monday.
Brendan Hansen finished atop the semifinal heats in the men's 100-meter backstroke with a time of 59.24 seconds. Mark Gangloff also won his heat in 1:00.17. The final is Monday.
