Suwon, South Korea (My Sportsbook) - The U.S. Women's National Team won the 2008 Peace Queen Cup with a 1-0 victory over Canada as midfielder Angela Hucles scored two minutes into second-half stoppage time.
With the match seemingly headed to overtime, a Canadian defender committed a foul about 35 yards from the goal on the right. Spying Lauren Cheney open inside the penalty box, Hucles took the free kick quickly. The ball skipped into the penalty area, but too far for Cheney, whose run might have distracted Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod. The innocuous looking pass then caught McLeod off-balance. She got a piece of the ball, but it skidded by her right leg and under her arms before rolling into the net.
It was the second time this year that Hucles has scored a stoppage-time winner. She also bagged a dramatic goal against Australia on May 3 in Birmingham, Ala., giving the USA a 5-4 victory with a 94th minute score.
Hucles won the Golden Ball as the Most Valuable Player in the tournament for her effort, and the win marked the second time the USA has defeated Canada by a 1-0 score to win the Peace Queen Cup, doing the same in the inaugural tournament in 2006.
Natasha Kai was denied by the woodwork in the 17th minute, and Lori Chalupny's deflected effort right before halftime called for a good stop from McLeod to keep the two team's level at the break.
Kai came close again in the second half with a volley from 10 yards that just missed the target, but Canada put together its best spell of the match starting in the 70th minute.
Brittany Timko's free kick found Christie Sinclair inside the box, but Canada's captain knocked the ball over the crossbar. Kara Lang then took a pass from Timko inside the box on the left, but she fired it into the side of the net while Timko got into a good position minutes later, but had the ball knocked away at the last second by Chalupny.
U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo made a pair of saves in the last 10 minutes to keep the match level when she stopped a header from Randee Hermus and parried a shot from Sinclair.
That set the stage for Hucles' fortuitous winner, which moves the Americans record in 2008 to 17-0-1. They have four friendly matches remaining before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, with games at Norway (July 2) and Sweden (July 5) just a few weeks away.
