Cubs stay hot as Lilly shuts down Jays

Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Ted Lilly silenced Toronto's bats over six shutout innings, as the Chicago Cubs clinched a series win over the Blue Jays, 7-4, in the finale of a three-game interleague series.

Lilly (7-5) allowed only one hit, while fanning six and walking five, including three in a rocky third inning, but the left-hander settled down to earn his second straight victory.

"He had a really good fastball, used his change up, and mixed in a few curveballs and sliders," Cubs manager Lou Pinella said of Lilly. "It was a really good performance."

Derrek Lee had two hits and three runs batted in and Aramis Ramirez hit a two- run homer. Jim Edmonds and Kosuke Fukudome each added RBI singles for Chicago, which has won six of its last seven.

Jesse Litsch (7-3) was touched for five runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings as the starter. The right-hander is now winless in his last three starts.

Greg Zaun smacked a two-run homer while Alex Rios and Vernon Wells each added a sac fly for Toronto, which has dropped three of its last four.

"Bottom line is we're not playing good enough to win," Jays manager John Gibbons said."We seriously got out pitched and out hit. They have a good ball club, that's why they're sitting where they are at."

The Cubs struck first, scoring three in the third. Micah Hoffpauir doubled down the right field line leading off and moved to third on a Reed Johnson single two batters later. Fukudome followed with a single to right, scoring one and Lee flared a single to right scoring another. Edmonds singled back up the middle two batters later, bringing in the Cubs third run.

Lilly walked the bases loaded with two outs in the home half but Wells hit a weak infield pop-up going after the first pitch.

Chicago broke open a close game in the seventh. A one-out single from Ryan Theriot and a Johnson double chased Litsch. Jesse Carlson came on to retire Fukudome for the second out. Shawn Camp entered to face Lee, who ripped a single back through the middle, scoring two. Ramirez then deposited a Camp slider into the seats in left-center for a commanding 7-0 lead.

Toronto finally put a run on the board in the home half after Lilly was lifted in favor of Scott Eyre. Zaun worked a leadoff walk and scored on a Rios sac fly. After Eyre allowed a single to Marco Scutaro and a pinch-hit double to Joe Inglett, Carlos Marmol came on to retire Wells on a fly out to end the inning.

Neal Cotts replaced Marmol with two outs in the eighth, only to walk Brad Wilkerson and serve up a two-run homer to Zaun, making it 7-3.

Toronto attempted to mount a comeback off Kerry Wood in the ninth. Wood allowed two singles and a sacrifice fly to Wells before retiring Matt Stairs on a fly out to end the game.
