Three eagles give Reifers Bank of America lead

Glenview, IL (My Sportsbook) - Kyle Reifers tallied three eagles on Thursday en route to a nine-under 63 and the first-round lead at the Bank of America Open.

Darron Stiles, third on the Nationwide Tour money list, Kris Blanks, David Lutterus and Keith Nolan share second place at seven-under-par 65.

Reifers broke into red figures with a birdie at the second after he holed his bunker shot. He two-putted from 20 feet for a bogey at the third, but the first eagle was on the horizon.

At the par-five fifth, Reifers knocked a hybrid-club to 25 feet. He sank that eagle putt, then hit a nine-iron to five feet to set up birdie at the par-four seventh.

He closed his front nine with an excellent birdie at the 217-yard, par-three ninth. Reifers hit a five-iron to four feet and tapped in to make the turn at four-under 32.

Reifers parred his first four holes on the back nine, but eagle No. 2 occurred at the 14th. He used a five-iron to get on in two, then drained the 20-footer for eagle to reach six-under.

He hit a sand-wedge to eight feet at the 15th and converted the birdie putt. Reifers found some trouble at 16 and 17, but saved par from eight feet and five feet, respectively.

"The par putts on Nos. 16 and 17 kept my round going," acknowledged Reifers, whose only win on the Nationwide Tour came at the 2006 Chattanooga Classic when he was 22.

At the par-five closing hole, Reifers once again hit the hybrid-club for his second. The ball rolled to 10 feet and Reifers ran it home for his third eagle, a 63 and the first-round lead.

"I don't know if I've had any rounds before with three eagles," said Reifers. "I wasn't thinking about it. When you're playing well, you aren't thinking about that."

Andrew Buckle, Brendon Todd, David McKenzie and Geoffrey Sisk are knotted in sixth at minus-six.

David Mathis, the leading money winner, who won two weeks ago and tied for second last week, Matt Weibring, Brendon De Jonge, Tommy Tolles, Gibby Gilbert III, Tom Scherrer, Arjun Atwal, Jim McGovern and Ricky Barnes are tied for 10th at five-under 67.
