Mitchellville, MD (My Sportsbook) - Jeff Klauk birdied the 18th hole on Sunday to win the Melwood Prince George's County Open by a shot over two players.
Klauk, who had bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes to drop into a tie for the lead, closed with a three-under 69 and claimed his second Nationwide Tour win at 12-under 276.
Jeff Brehaut fired a flawless five-under 67 and shared second place with David Mathis (70) at 11-under 277.
Klauk and Mathis were among four players who shared the third-round lead. The others -- Matt Weibring and Chad Ginn -- both shot 73 on Sunday to fall into a tie for ninth place at eight-under 280.
Klauk, a 30-year-old from Florida, claimed his first win since the 2003 Wichita Open with a 12-foot birdie putt at the last hole. It was a putt he'd seen "a thousand times."
"Right-to-left, just outside the hole. I just visualized it going in," said Klauk, who won $117,000. "It was probably the best putt I hit all week."
Klauk played flawlessly before making his back-to-back bogeys at the 16th and 17th, collecting four birdies and 11 pars over his first 15 holes. He said he was nervous at the 18th hole.
"I've been working with my coach on keeping my mind quiet. Everybody knows out here you've got to really trust yourself and believe," said Klauk. "I've been doing that this year, more so than any swing change. It's just believing in yourself and I finally started doing that."
Klauk's first-place check brought his earnings to $221,433 this year -- enough cash already that he should make it into the top-25 on the season-ending money list.
That would earn him a spot on the PGA Tour next season.
"Everyone's told me, 'You hit the ball well enough, you should be on the PGA Tour,'" said Klauk. "I just hadn't proved it to myself."
