Sheets goes distance as Brewers top Pirates

Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - Ben Sheets scattered 11 hits for his second complete game of the season, and Rickie Weeks hit a solo home run to push the Milwaukee Brewers past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-1, in the second of a three- game set at PNC Park.

Sheets (5-1) struck out six in his 123-pitch effort for the Brewers, who have won the first two of this series after a five-game losing streak. Sheets finished off his 15th career complete game despite only retiring the Pirates in order once -- in the fifth inning.

"A lot of times, it's what happens in the game," said Sheets, eager to share credit for his performance. "Your teammates have a lot to do with pitching a complete game also. That's what people overlook. They think it's just the pitcher. It's making plays, getting runs too. That way, you don't have to get pinch-hit for."

Weeks scored twice, while Ryan Braun and Corey Hart each went 2-for-5, knocked in a run and scored.

Xavier Nady belted his sixth homer of the year for the Pirates, who have dropped three straight. Nady, Chris Gomez and Adam LaRoche collected a pair of hits apiece, but the Bucs finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Ian Snell (2-3) dropped the decision, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on nine hits in six innings.

With the game tied 1-1, the Pirates' defense betrayed them in the fifth, as Weeks reached on an error to start the inning when LaRoche let a soft grounder go between his legs. Weeks proceeded to steal second, and one out later, Braun smoked a low line drive that rolled to the fence in left-center for a run- scoring triple.

Prince Fielder popped out, but Hart delivered an RBI single to give Milwaukee a 3-1 lead.

Weeks struck again in the sixth, increasing the lead to 4-1 with a two-out homer to left-center.

With one out in the home eighth, LaRoche belted a fly ball to deep center. Mike Cameron looked to have it tracked down, but slipped on the grass as the ball fell for a double. However, Nady grounded back to the mound, then Braun made a tremendous sliding catch on Doug Mientkiewicz's popup in foul territory to end the frame.

Sheets worked around a single to Gomez in the ninth, striking out Freddy Sanchez to finish off the complete game.

"Guys on base, nobody on, he's attacking," said LaRoche of Sheets. "He's really aggressive, and we knew that coming in."

Milwaukee pounced on Snell in the second, as Hart laced a ground-rule double into right with one out, then J.J. Hardy followed with a soft single to right to plate the game's first run.

Nady finally helped the Pirates break through in the fourth, leading off by smashing a 2-2 pitch over the wall in center to tie the game.

Game Notes

The Brewers were 3-for-10 with men in scoring position, but still stranded 10 runners...Weeks' stolen base was his eighth of the season...Craig Counsell was the only Brewer not to record a hit...Dave Bush (1-4) looks to complete the sweep for the Brewers against Tom Gorzelanny (3-4) on Thursday...Attendance was just 8,805.
