San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - San Diego starting pitcher Chris Young left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals after getting hit in the face by an Albert Pujols line drive. Padres catcher Josh Bard was forced to an early exit as well, after a collision with the St. Louis first baseman. Both injuries occurred in the top of the third inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Young offered an 0-2 slider that Pujols lined right back at the hurler. Young went down clutching his bloodied face, and the trainer came out to evaluate him. Clearly, Young was unable to stay in the game and Cla Meredith took over on the hill. Young did walk off the field under his own power, though. With runners on first and second again, Troy Glaus belted a single to right field. Aaron Miles came around to score and Pujols did too for a 3-2 lead. Bard proceeded to block the plate, forcing Pujols to plow over the catcher. It appeared as if Bard's left foot was twisted when Pujols slid in. Luke Carlin resumed catching duties for San Diego.
