(My Sportsbook) - Chien-Ming Wang tries to get the Yankees back in the win column this evening, as they try and avoid a sweep in their rain-shortened two-game Subway Series with the Mets at Yankee Stadium.
Wang, a 19-game winner in each of the last two seasons, pitched well enough to get the win on Tuesday against Tampa Bay, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 loss. Wang, who is 6-1 with a 2.90 earned run average, received zero run support for the second straight game and gave up a run and seven hits in seven innings to the Rays.
The 28-year-old righty defeated the Mets the only other time he faced them, surrendering a pair of runs and six hits in 8 2/3 innings.
In the opener of this abbreviated set on Saturday, Johan Santana pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and survived three Yankees home runs in 7-4 Mets' win.
Friday's game between the clubs was postponed due to rain, allowing the Yankees to start Andy Pettitte against the Mets ace. Santana (5-2) got the best of the matchup, however, holding the Yankees to four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
David Wright went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, and Jose Reyes also homered for the Mets, who had dropped three of four entering play. Billy Wagner came on and got the last four outs, surviving a two-on, no-outs situation in the ninth to pick up his ninth save.
Derek Jeter went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Yankees, who have dropped four of five to fall three games under .500. Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu also homered for the Bronx Bombers, who have managed just 10 runs in their last 51 innings.
Pettitte (3-5) was touched for three runs on seven hits in six innings, fanning seven and walking two.
Heading to the hill tonight for the Mets will be inconsistent left-hander Oliver Perez, who is 3-3 with a 4.61 ERA. Perez earned the win last Sunday against Cincinnati, giving up three runs and three hits in six innings. He also walked four and struck out eight in the win.
Perez has had a modicum of success against the Yankees, posting a 3-1 mark to go along with a 3.04 ERA in four games against them.
These teams have split their six-game season series in each of the last three seasons. The Yankees, though, have baseball's best all-time interleague record at 113-80.
