Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - Adrian Beltre's two-run homer broke a tie in
the seventh inning, as the
Seattle Mariners used a solid Erik Bedard start to
slip past the
San Diego Padres, 4-2 in the second installment of a three-game
set at Safeco Field.
Bedard (3-2), who didn't last past the second inning in his previous start,
fanned 10 while allowing just two runs and five hits in his eight innings on
the mound.
"It was just what the doctor ordered," Mariners coach John McLaren said. "It
was a great pitched game. Eric was outstanding. He had all his pitches
working. He was on the top of his game."
J.J. Putz put the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but managed to record
his fourth save of the season.
Ichiro Suzuki was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a steal and an RBI double, as
Seattle won its second game in three tries.
Randy Wolf (2-4) was on top of his game until the seventh, but the lefty
finished with the loss after being charged for three runs on seven hits
through 6 1/3 innings for San Diego, which has dropped three of four.
San Diego registered just six hits, as Adrian Gonzalez provided the runs with
a two-run homer. Brian Giles tallied two hits in defeat.
Holding a 2-1 lead, Wolf looked in control heading to the seventh. But Jamie
Burke led off with a single and Suzuki followed two batters later with a drive
to the right-center gap on the 10th pitch of the at-bat. Burke was running on
contact and sped around the bases, sliding to the plate for the tying run.
"I could pitch better, but better doesn't mean anything if, at the end of the
game, the other team has more runs than you," Wolf said.
The tally ended Wolf's night, and Cla Meredith was welcomed to the game with
Beltre's blast over the left field wall.
Bedard mowed down the Padres in the eighth, and Putz survived two base runners
to close out the victory. With runners on first and second, Putz got Kevin
Kouzmanoff to pop out to end the game.
Suzuki got the Mariners going in the first with a single, steal and run scored
on Ibanez's double to left. Seattle stranded two in scoring position with one
out, however, as Kenji Johjima and Richie Sexson struck out to end the threat.
Neither team managed much until the fourth when Gonzalez put the Padres ahead
with his eighth homer of the year.
