Guevara leads TFC to third straight win

Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Amado Guevara sure looked like a former MVP on Saturday.

Guevara, the best player in Major League Soccer in 2004, had two goals to help Toronto FC defeat the Kansas City Wizards, 2-0, to set a franchise record with its third straight win.

The Honduran international announced his return to MLS - he played four games last year with Chivas USA before leaving the league - by netting his first two goals since the 1996 season with New York.

"Guevara was a good signing for them, and that was proven true today," Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad said.

Toronto FC goalie Greg Sutton had three saves for his second straight shutout. TFC had just five shutouts during its six-win, debut season last year.

K.C., which entered the weekend leading the Eastern Conference, was trying to become the first team to four wins but left sold out BMO Field with its second loss.

Guevara was selected MVP after having 10 goals and 10 assists for New York in 2004. He had 11 goals and 11 assists the next season, and now has 34 goals and 36 assists in his MLS career.

He was traded to Chivas before last season but played just four games and left the club after a spat with coach Preki.

TFC, which had the worst record in MLS last year, took a chance on Guevara and it's already paying off.

"Amado's a huge addition to Toronto FC," K.C. goalie Kevin Hartman said.

Guevara helped Toronto control possession in the first half. TFC created a lot more good scoring chances, although the statistics showed both team's with six shots and no goals at the end of the half.

Guevara set up English midfielder Rohan Ricketts in the 22nd minute for TFC's first scoring chance. Guevara dribbled into the box on the right side and sent a pass back to Ricketts, who had his shot deflected Conrad.

Guevara nearly put TFC in front less than a minute later, but his header was cleared off the line by K.C. rookie defender Chance Myers, who also saved a goal last week.

Guevara continued to stay involved in TFC's attack, running onto a cross from Marvell Wynne to head the ball back into the middle of the area where K.C. was able to clear in the 28th minute.

Guevara used a spectacular bicycle kick from just inside the area in the 35th minute but the shot sailed just wide of the right post.

Led by Guevara, Toronto's revamped squad - which includes Ricketts and former French international Laurent Robert - finally broke out in the second half.

Wynne helped set up the first goal when he dribbled into the box. Kansas City midfielder Kerry Zavagnin stripped the ball to end the attack but, when Tyson Wahl tried to clear, it bounced off teammate Michael Harrington and to Guevara behind the defense.

Guevara was in an offside position - but because the ball was played by a K.C. player off a teammate - he was correctly ruled not to be offside. Guevara gave Hartman no chance by firing into the back of the net from just a few yards.

The Wizards failed to test Sutton for the first 65 minutes, but the TFC goalie made a key save in the 68th minute to preserve the one-goal lead.

"That was a match winning save for us," Toronto coach John Carver said.

K.C.'s Claudio Lopez, a designated player, got loose on the left and dribbled to the top of the box before passing to Ivan Trujillo. His shot aimed at the right post was knocked down by Sutton, who spilled a rebound but quickly got to the loose ball.

Guevara capped his performance and put the match away with a perfect free kick in the 77th minute. From about 25 yards, Guevara dipped the ball over the wall and into the upper left corner past a helpless Hartman.

"Thankfully it went to the right place," Guevara said.

Toronto (3-2-0) will try to extend its streak Thursday when Red Bull New York visits BMO Field. Kansas City will try to rebound May 3 at the Columbus Crew.
