New York, NY (My Sportsbook) -
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson,
Atlanta Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney and kicker Jason Hanson of the
Detroit Lions were named NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for the ninth week of the NFL season.
Johnson completed 24-of-31 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns without an interception in Tampa Bay's 38-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The 11-year veteran led the Buccaneers to scores on six of its 10 possessions and his five touchdown passes tied Steve DeBerg's 15-year-old club record.
"We want to put together an offense that is not only competitive but exciting," Bucs head coach John Gruden said. "I think that [Johnson], our receivers and our offensive line did some really good things. We are going to work hard not to be a good offense, but a great offense."
The 38 points posted by the Tampa offense on Sunday represents their biggest total of the season.
This is Johnson's fifth Player of the Week award.
Kerney recorded seven tackles, two sacks and recovered a fumble for a touchdown in Atlanta's 20-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. It was his second multi-sack game in the last three contests.
"Pat was outstanding," Falcons head coach Dan Reeves said. "He had tackles, "Pat was outstanding," Falcons head coach Dan Reeves said. "He had tackles, sacks and he scored the big touchdown for us. We hit on a lot of our defensive goals, including the most important, which was winning the game."
Kerney scored his touchdown two minutes into the second quarter when he scooped up a loose ball that was inadvertently kicked by a Ravens lineman and returned it for a score. The touchdown gave Atlanta a 10-3 advantage.
In his fourth season from Virginia, this is Kerney's first Player of the Week Award.
Hanson connected on all three of his field goal attempts in Detroit's 9-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys. His 43-yarder with 48 seconds left in the game proved to be the difference, as the Lions' defense halted Dallas' final drive of the contest.
"You want to win by at least a touchdown, and you don't want it to come down to your kicker," Hanson said. "But when it does, that's my job and we were able to get it done and get the win today."
In his 11th season from Washington State, this is Hanson's seventh Player of the Week Award.
Other nominees for Offensive Player of the Week were Tiki Barber, Marshall Faulk, Antonio Freeman, Jeff Garcia, Ahman Green, Keyshawn Johnson, Terrell Owens and Kenny Watson.
Meanwhile, Andre Carter, Donte Curry, Hugh Douglas, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Kim Herring, Robert Porcher, Simeon Rice, Darren Sharper, Bruce Smith and Nate Wayne were also considered for the Defensive Player of the Week Award.
Nominees for Special Teams Player of the Week were David Akers, and Jimmy Williams.
