Colorado Springs, CO (My Sportsbook) - The United States Anti-Doping Agency
(USADA) announced Friday details of a new voluntary initiative to send clean
athletes to this year's Olympics in Beijing.
The pilot testing program, which is designed to advance the science of anti-
doping, includes the collection of both blood and urine samples for American
Olympic hopefuls. Those samples will be tested for prohibited substances and
the analytical results will then be used to establish a baseline for each
athlete. Following the initial baseline testing each athlete is subject to
ongoing monitoring through the collection of additional blood and urine
samples.
USADA said it will also start a new campaign designed to promote clean
athletes.
"In order to prevail in the fight against doping in sport, we must continually
refine and explore new, credible measures that can be introduced to our
program," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. "Our efforts have as much to do with
protecting the health and well-being of the overwhelming majority of athletes
who compete clean as catching and sanctioning the few who, unfortunately,
break the rules."
In advance of the Olympics, the organization said it would expand the
collection of blood samples. The program, which has no advance notice of
testing, takes place at least 12 months before the Games. Athletes have to
notify USADA of their notification of location to be available for unannounced
testing at random times.
