Rapids, Fire aim to rebound from tough losses

Bridgeview, IL (My Sportsbook) - The Chicago Fire and Colorado Rapids are both coming off Major League Soccer losses that saw them relinquish their early season positions at the top of their respective conferences a week ago.

Both teams will look to rebound when they square off at Toyota park on Saturday night, with both gunning for their third win of the campaign.

"It was a total letdown as a team today, and I'm extremely disappointed, we all are," said Colorado coach Fernando Clavijo after his team lost to the expansion San Jose Earthquakes. "We never got possession of the ball. We started poorly. We were missing passes, not connecting enough. On the 50-50 balls we lost pretty much every single battle. Playing like that you're not going to get many results. We didn't have the same attitude to move the ball quick enough like we did the last three games."

"In the first couple of games we finished our chances," Fire coach Denis Hamlett said after his team lost to Kansas City, 1-0. "Tonight we get many chances and we just don't finish. It's going to happen in soccer. There's going to be days where you dominate the game and you just can't get the goal."

While both teams are coming off shutout losses, the Rapids are more frustrated because they let an expansion team take their best player out of the game.

"Today was very clear - they took Christian (Gomez) out of the game, and our attack was not there," Clavijo said. "He was never a factor. They marked him very tight. Not only did they do a pretty good job, but it wasn't Christian's best game either. The touch was not there. He never had a chance to really look at a goal. I don't think he took a shot at goal. You have to give credit to their defenders for doing a pretty good job on him, but also Christian was off. Many of our players were off today."

The Rapids will have a tough time this week as well, taking on one of the better defensive teams in the league. They will need to show more motivation than they did against the 'Quakes.

"They seemed like they were the home team; they were more hungry," Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul said. "They're the ones that set the tempo. We ended up playing at their level, in their style, because from the get-go, they were possessing the ball, moving around, so we end up chasing, chasing, chasing until we were down one-nil."

The Fire could be without forward/midfielder Chris Rolfe for the second straight game with an ankle injury while Colorado will be without forward Conor Casey, defender Mike Petke and probably midfielder John DiRaimondo.
