Stanford, CA (My Sportsbook) - Candice Wiggins exploded for a school-record 44 points as the Stanford Cardinal easily dismissed the UTEP Miners, 88-54, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the Spokane Region.
Wiggins, who shot 6-of-13 from three-point range and 15-of-27 from the floor overall, added 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals in the onslaught for second-seeded Stanford (32-3), which will now take on Pittsburgh in the next round of the tourney.
Jayne Appel made good on all nine of her field goal attempts and finished with 20 points, while Kayla Pedersen recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the lopsided decision as well.
The seventh-seeded Miners (28-4) were paced by Izabela Piekarska with 17 points and eight rebounds as she shot 8-of-20 from the floor. Jareica Hughes tacked on 12 points on a mere 3-of-12 from the field, followed by Timika Williams with 10 points.
UTEP held a brief five-point lead four minutes into the first half, but from there the Cardinal shot 51.7 percent from the floor and grabbed a 40-29 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Miners completely fell apart with a mere 8-of-32 shooting from the field and 1-of-9 beyond the arc, en route to the 34-point defeat.
UTEP lost the battle of the boards, 43-30, and made a feeble 29 percent from the floor on the night.
The scoring outburst by Wiggins was the third-highest total in women's tournament history, behind the 47-point effort by Sheryl Swoopes in the 1993 title game and the all-time mark of 50 points produced by Lorri Bauman of Drake versus Maryland back in 1982.
