Lisbon, Portugal (My Sportsbook) - Benfica manager Jose Antonio Camacho has resigned from the Lisbon club following a news conference. "I think it is best (my resignation) for the team," Camacho said at the news conference. "I hope that the players improve with another coach." Assistant Fernando Chalana will take over for Camacho as the team prepares for the second leg of its UEFA Cup Round of 16 matchup against Getafe on Wednesday. The Portuguese side enters the game trailing 2-1. The announcement came shortly after Benfica's 2-2 draw with last-place Uniao Leiria on Sunday, a team with just one win in 22 league games. The result leaves Benfica 14 points back of league-leaders FC Porto, while the club is only two points ahead of third-place Guimaraes. Camacho took over at Benfica for the second time in August after former manager Fernando Santos was fired. He led Benfica to a second-place finish in 2004 in his first stint with the club. He held the manager's job with the Spanish national team between 1998 and 2002, guiding the club to quarterfinal appearances in both EURO 2000 and the 2002 World Cup. Camacho resigned from the national team following their loss to South Korea in the World Cup before he moved on to Real Madrid.
