(My Sportsbook) - Cleveland will have one last chance to prove itself and play spoiler Sunday, when it faces the arch-rival
Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.
Cleveland enters off an embarrassing 35-0 home beating at the hands of the Ravens. The Browns were dominated by Jamal Lewis for the second time this season, as he rushed the ball 22 times for 205 yards (9.3 ypc) and two touchdowns in just 3 1/2 quarters. In two games against Cleveland this season, Lewis posted 500 yards on 52 carries and four TDs.
"We had a chance to hold every single one of those long runs to under 10 yards," Browns Head Coach Butch Davis said about Lewis' effort. "We either missed the tackle or didn't come off the corner in the right position."
The Browns have lost five straight and eight of their last nine contests to slide into the cellar of the North division. Cleveland is in the midst of its longest skid since 2000 under Chris Palmer, when it dropped five straight to close the season. The Browns also suffered through a seven-game skid during the 3-13 2000 campaign.
"To lose this big is like my rookie year, but then it was normal," said receiver Dennis Northcutt. "To go back to something like this, it's like, 'No, no, no.' We can't go back there.
"To me, it's scary. When you lose little, you have a future. When you lose big, you've got a lot of work to do."
In what could have been his last career home start in Cleveland, Tim Couch was battered for five sacks last week. Couch coughed the ball up twice in the contest -- one leading to a Jamal Lewis 24-yard touchdown run. Baltimore had little trouble getting past the Browns' patchwork offensive line.
"We need to learn to protect the quarterback and give the quarterback and opportunity to not get hit and not give up sacks and fumbles," Davis said. "That's been a recurring theme this entire season and we absolutely have to address it. That has to be our No. 1 priority - to rebuild and re-establish ourselves on the offensive line to give our quarterback a fighting chance."
Cleveland's line has surrendered 19 sacks in the last five games -- all losses. It hasn't helped that five offensive linemen, including starters C Jeff Faine, G Paul Zukauskas and T Ross Verba are out for the season due to injuries. Somehow, the Browns must step up and block for Couch in this contest.
Cleveland will continue to get a good look at rookie running back Lee Suggs this week. Suggs, a 23-year-old out of Virginia Tech, ran 20 times for 68 yards against the Ravens. Meanwhile, normal starter Jamel White was limited to four carries for 10 yards. The Browns own the league's 31st-best rushing offense (93.7 ypg).
