(My Sportsbook) - The NFC West champion Rams will look to nail down home field advantage throughout the playoffs Sunday, when they close out the regular season against the
Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
St. Louis sewed up at least a bye with an impressive 27-10 win over the playoff-hopeful Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. With the victory, the Rams finished a perfect home season (8-0) and won a franchise record 14th consecutive game at Edward Jones Dome.
Thanks to a surprising Philadelphia loss to San Francisco, the Rams need just a win here or an Eagles loss to Washington Saturday to secure homefield advantage throughout the postseason. Overall, St. Louis has won seven straight and 11 of its next 12.
"We've got to take care of this week, obviously," St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger said. "We can't overlook Detroit. I watched them on Thanksgiving, and they played very well [defeating Green Bay]. So you never know. But fortunately, we have the motivation. Not that we need it. But we know if we win, we've got the home field."
Bulger wasn't perfect by any stretch against the Bengals, but he did complete 24-of-38 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and his 21st interception. Bulger stepped it up when it counted though, as he helped the Rams to 10-of-16 third down conversions.
"We have a pretty extensive third-down package," said wide receiver Dane Looker."That's a big down for us, and we came through with a good percentage Sunday."
Looker, who was forced into the starting lineup in place of injured veteran Isaac Bruce (mild high ankle sprain) against the Bengals, caught three balls for 17 yards. Bruce, who is just 19 yards shy of his fifth consecutive 1,000- yard season in receiving. isn't likely to play in this contest.
HOLT OF A GAME
Pro Bowl wideout Torry Holt was the star of the game for the St. Louis offense last week, catching 10 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. Holt recorded his 10th 100-yard receiving contest of the season, breaking the franchise record set by Bruce in 1995.
Torry Holt is tied with Charley Hennigan, Herman Moore and Marvin Harrison for the second-most 100-yard games in NFL history, and one off the record set by Michael Irvin in 1995.
Torry Holt should have another big day against the sub-par Detroit secondary this week. The matchup to watch will be Holt, who leads the league with 112 catches for 1,642 yards and 12 touchdowns, against Pro Bowl corner Dre' Bly. Bly has posted a team-high six interceptions this season, while tallying 52 tackles.
Terrence Holt, Torry's brother, could find himself matched up against his family member in this contest.
"He's rolling real good this season," Terrence Holt said about his brother. "I am just mad that the buck will have to stop this week. He has 10, 100-yard receiving games this year and we want to make sure he doesn't get No. 11 against us."
