(My Sportsbook) - Jack Del Rio's Jaguars try to get their first road win and end the season with a winning second-half record when they travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons in the season finale on Sunday.
Jacksonville survived the wildest ending to a regular-season game in NFL history last week to beat the Saints 20-19 and earn a winning record at home.
With just six seconds left, the Jaguars led 20-13 and the Saints had the ball 75 yards from the end zone. A completion and three laterals later and the Saints had a touchdown. Kicker John Carney, though, just as incredibly pushed the game-tying extra point wide right and the Jags had the win.
Overlooked in the wacky conclusion was the Jaguars' play against the run. Jacksonville held Deuce McAllister to 50 yards rushing in the game.
Byron Leftwich continues to struggle with turnovers, but he has played well enough for the Jaguars to be competitive. The Jags finished with a winning home record (5-3) and a win Sunday would give them a 5-3 mark over the second half of the season.
"Of course we want to close out the season with a winning streak," said Del Rio. "We have a lot of pride in what we do and need to continue to build on what we have here. This was my first season in Jacksonville, and I think we really made some nice progress over the course of the second half [of the year]."
However, the Jags are winless on the road this season, but they have played well at times away from Alltel Stadium. Jacksonville lost in the final minute at Carolina, Houston, Tennessee, and against the New York Jets.
Fred Taylor has put the "Fragile Fred" reputation to rest for good this season. Taylor has again been healthy for a full season and is playing as well as ever. Against the Saints, he had a career-high 34 carries in the game and rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown.
Taylor has surpassed his own team rushing record, galloping for 1,451 yards this season. He should pad that total on Sunday against the NFL's 27th-ranked run defense. The Falcons allow 143 rushing yards a game.
PROUD OF STROUD: Jacksonville has been in so many close games because it has consistently been able to stuff the run. The Jaguars are second against the run for the fifth straight week and could finish ahead of first-place Tennessee with a stifling effort Sunday in Atlanta.
Jacksonville's defensive players have bought into Del Rio's hard-hitting philosophy. They have beaten teams up on defense. The physical play starts up front with defensive tackles John Henderson and Marcus Stroud. They are the main reasons for the success against the run. After a slow start, the run defense has improved by leaps and bounds. Jacksonville allows 82.7 yards per game rushing and is first in the NFL in rushing yards against per attempt (3.1).
